Fires Den

PART I

The sounds of the radio were slowly tuning out of her head. Faith sat and looked at the clock on the provided desk in her hotel room. She was a tall slender girl with raven hair and gray eyes. She was like no one else in the world. She was a powerful girl with gifts that few possessed. She could do things no one in the world could do. Her strength was that of the most skilled Olympic athlete, and yet she had the grace of the most poised ballet dancer. Her size made her deceiving, so much power and yet so tiny.

She turned and looked out of the window. The night is deceptive in its nature. She was back to face the night. There was nothing that could be done to stop the impending danger. She would have to face it. She had to stand up to evil one last time and save Logan.

She was back in Fires Den. The small town had received its name after a strange and deadly occurrence of supernatural fires that had engulfed the town. Now it seemed that there were never any fires at all. Instead of the fires there were other things, things that killed and hunted during the night. Now she was back to fight for Logan.

The months had passed by since he had found her. Logan had saved her from something worse than death. He saved her from herself. She had turned into someone who wanted no part of life. She tried to sink into a world where she would be anonymous. The world that everyone else knew, the world that didn’t deal with the things that children believed hid under the bed or in the closet.

Now Logan was missing and she was the only one that could save him. He was the person that had saved her and it was time to repay her debts. She knew that there was an excellent chance that someone wouldn’t make it out of this fight. Evil was near, she could feel it emanating from everything and it was ready for her. She was sure to need the last two members of the original group, the people that had fought beside her when no one else had. They had been involved in this since the beginning and now they would try and put an end it to.

“We need to get everything ready.”
“Faith, are you sure that this plan is going to work? We have no solid information on the thing that took Logan. For all we know he could be dead already.”
“I am going to pretend I didn’t hear you say that last part Alex.”
“Pretend all you like but it is probably true and you know it.”

Alex was always a problem for Faith. They had worked together fighting evil earthly and supernatural for as long as either of them would care to remember. In that time the confrontations had been heated and they had almost killed each other on more than one occasion. Logan had always been the one to stop them before it got too heated or too physical. Alex was a walking book. If you needed information on anything he was the man that you would see. He was skilled in both the natural and supernatural ways of evil. Faith came to him first. She knew that he would do anything to save Logan. He was Logan’s best friend. He knew what Logan meant to Faith as well. He was one of the most capable people in this fight.

“So what do think this thing is Alex?”
“It is something that you cannot beat, not this time.”
“What makes you say that?”
“The fact that this evil entity took Logan and no one could stop it from happening. Now I know that you have more strength than the rest of us but that does not mean that you can handle it. Logan is almost as strong as you are and he could not stop it. He could not even save himself.”
“Do you think that I’ll fail?”
“I’m not saying that Faith.”
“Please Faith just think this through first, Alex knows what he’s talking about. If you didn’t believe it then you wouldn’t have asked him to help you. I don’t want you to think that I’m on his side. You know that I will fight with you till the very end but…I think it’s too much. I think it’s a trap.”
“Thanks for the input Sara but you don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Don’t snap at me Faith, be rational. Think about what you’re saying.”

Sara was the girl that dealt with normal evils. She handled the guys that deserved to be in jail. The people. She wanted justice to be served. Faith had met her one night while she was searching for some “thing” that had killed a young girl. Since that time Sara had learned a lot about the world. She learned everything she hadn’t really wanted to know. Logan helped her to deal with her issues. She was filled with rage then and now she found a way to let it out with his help. Faith and Sara became good friends. Faith knew that Sara would always be there for her.

“I just don’t think that this is right Faith.”
“Sara I have no other choice, I have to fight and I need you two to help me.”
“Can’t you just wait to see if we can get some more information? Maybe if you just wait a couple more days then we’ll get something. We have to.”
“No. We have to do this now. There’s something that I haven’t told you guys. I found a note in my hotel the other day. Look.”

They walked to Faith and looked at the note her hand held.
Do you think that you will be able to save him Faith? Do you think that he has faith in you? Isn’t it funny the way that things work out? You thought that you had been rid of me. I’m sure by now you must have figured out that evil doesn’t just go away. I don’t have to be some terrifying animal of monster that you so often fight. All I have to do is be. The balance of the scales is off. One of you will die. You have two days and then the decision will be made for you. Please come by soon you little boy toy will be waiting…and so will I.
Your dearest friend.

“Why didn’t you show this to us sooner Faith?”
“What do you mean? Are you really asking me why? I’ve been going crazy for the past couple of days and you’re asking me silly questions.”
“Faith! Listen to Alex. You are powerful, you have been fighting evil in all its forms forever and now you have a big battle ahead of you and you won’t share your information. Think about that. It’s insane; if you want us all to get out alive then you have to help us. Let us be there for you. Let us fight with you and not against you. We’ve already lost too many good people. I don’t want to add your name as well as Logan’s to that list.”
“Fine. Let me tell you everything I know. Logan is trapped somewhere. I don’t know where and I don’t know how to get information on how to get there. All I know is that he’s still in Fires Den and by the way I think you two should stop giving me such a hard time. My best friend is in the hands of something I can’t even imagine and you are asking me millions of questions. If you want to help then I suggest that you stop acting like prissy little brats and start researching this thing.”
“Do you know what it’s called? Sara and I can try and find something out if we have a name.” Faith watched the two people standing in front of her. She could feel their strength. She knew that they were both prepared, even if they couldn’t admit it.
“I fought it once before and I think Logan has too it’s so familiar…Oh My God.”
“What is it Faith? How do you know?”
“I know Alex. I know what it is we are fighting against.”
“What is it?”
“About six months ago Logan went to go find me. Remember, I disappeared for awhile?”
“I remember that, what happened to you?”

“It doesn’t matter what happened to me personally. What matters is that he helped me. We were coming back when we were stopped by some basic bad. There were a lot of supernatural things going on in this little town. I don’t remember what the name of it was. We stayed there for a couple of days after the third day we saw it. It was this thing that everyone called Amorphous. I think it means ‘without shape’. I didn’t understand how they had come up with the name until I saw what it did. It changed, morphed into so many things. It didn’t have a shape of its own. We didn’t know how to stop it. During our fight out in the streets it changed into a person. That was when we hit it. Logan and I fought it so hard that it didn’t have a chance to breathe. We figured that if it didn’t have a chance to do anything then we could beat it. Our plan worked. Of course now I’m rethinking that whole idea. It seems as if he never died. I mean, the body disappeared and we were so sure it was dead. Maybe he wasn’t ever alive to begin with. Things weren’t the same after that. Logan grew very quiet like he wanted to tell me something and after a couple days of recuperation we left. We almost came here. I wasn’t ready so he went on without me. I stayed at a hotel a little ways out of town. We kept in touch and then one day it stopped. We didn’t talk he didn’t call or write. I was worried so I thought I would come back to find him but when I before I left I found the note.”

“But Faith, you have to understand our point of view here. It is very difficult for us to understand this Big Evil. There are not many things that can be done to something that cannot be killed. I know you know that and I need to know any specific details. This is Fires Den. The place where everything decides to happen and no one chooses to see it.”
“Yes and now we have this evil that has taken Logan away. Alex has to know Faith and I have to know. What can we do to stop this thing?”
Faith sat down and put her head in her hands. There was so much that Alex and Sara didn’t know. Although they had known Faith and Logan for a long time they still didn’t know a lot about them. There were things that they would never know, like the fact that they loved each other. The main objective as faith saw it was to get Logan back. The other was to defeat Amorphous. It felt impossible. Taking a big breath Faith lifted her head to look around. She saw both Alex and Sara looking at her. It was going to be a long night. Sleep was sure to escape her.
