SPOILER:
The movie starts with Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan) before his wedding to Gayatri. He goes over to Lolita’s (Vidya Balan) house to see her mother. Lolita’s mother talks to him and mentions what a great son-in-law Girish (Sanjay Dutt) is. As Shekhar is leaving, Lolita stops him and tries to flirt with him a bit. Shekhar is angry and reminds her she is a married woman and leaves.
The movie then goes into a flashback.
Lolita’s father Gurucharan has mortgaged his house to his neighbor and supposedly good friend Nabin who is also Shekhar’s father. What we find out is that the mortgage was only for 150,000 when the house was worth 2 million. Nabin knew Gurucharan couldn’t afford the mortgage and was secretly planning on taking over the house and turning it into a hotel.
Lolita, who was working for Nabin, found out about it. Girish in the meantime had arrived. He is the brother of a family friend. He instantly falls in love with Lolita. He finds out about what is happening with the house and offers Gurucharan employment with 5 years advance pay, giving him the money to pay off his debt. He does so, much to Nabin’s surprise.
Nabin is yelled at by the man he made the Hotel deal with and Nabin takes it out on Lolita, saying that Girish paid for her and he calls her a prostitute.
Lolita and Shekhar finally realize they are in love and marry each other by themselves by exchanging a gold chain on their necks. They then consummate their relationship but keep their marriage a secret.
Nabin now hates Shekhar’s family and has a brick wall built between their houses while Shekhar is away on business. Gurucharan has a heart attack from the shock. Girish and the family then all pack up to go to London where Gurucharan can get the health care he needs. Gurucharan later passes away and it is told to Shekhar that it was his wish that Girish marry Lolita and that they did marry.
We cut back to the present and Girish comes to talk to Shekhar. He tells him that while he did love Lolita, it was easy to see that she loved Shekhar. Girish also says that he is married to Koel, Lolita’s sister, and not Lolita. Shekhar runs outside and starts to hit the brick wall. He eventually breaks through, at the encouragement of his mother and friend, but much to the displeasure of his father. He finds Lolita on the other side and he brings her to his house as his bride.
