Into the Abyss: M.I.A.
Chapter 7

Antsy wasn’t the word of the crew of MIA as the week crept by. Moving Melian didn’t
take much as she didn’t have many belongings. Jared was even able to convert a bed into a crib. Baby food wasn’t a problem either. There was a small truck load of jars and other baby products, (Diapers, wipes, etc.). Dyro was already making toys and things out of extra supplies and materials. (AN: He is good for something at least ^_^)
Melian and Lania were putting away supplies in the babies room when Melian gasped and
pressed her hands to her belly. “I have been having cramps all morning but that one was
the strongest yet.” Mania took her to the Infirmary without another word and joyfully
announced that the baby was indeed coming.
After 12 hours of labor Melian gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Before any celebration
could begin however Melian cried out and Lania looked down to see another head was
beginning to crown. “Oh! Melian, when I say, I want you to push again...OK...push!”
Melian grabbed tighter to her brother’s hand. Jared was trying to keep a straight face but
his sister was starting to cut off the blood flow to his hand.
So, Katina and Eryk entered the world. Katina weighting 6.3 pounds and Eryk weighting
6.7 pounds. Lania pronounced both babies in perfect health. One strange thing however
made all of them pause. Both children had long golden/brown tails.
Melian was the most accepting of the twins, unusual appendage. “I guess that rules out
me being human.” She shrugged.
Jar/ed had taking an instant liking to his niece and nephew. He was evening willing to
help Melian feed them. (Which wasn’t an easy task.)
Everyone adjusted too the new crew members easily. Although there tails were strange
after a while everyone got used to them.
**Two Months later**
Everything was pretty normal and quiet. The twins were growing normally and had
learned to sit up without aid. Dyro had started making toys for when the children were
older. Half completed dolls and toy soldiers littered his room.
It was night, Melian and Lania had just put the twins to bed. Melian, while watching the
two sleeping babies, began to talk. “I still find it incomprehensible how much I love these
two.” She smiled painfully, “Considering how they came about.”
Lania was silent, she knew Melian was going to share what happened to her.
“While my brother was trained to kill my life was pretty simple. Until I turned sixteen
anyway. Then the things the doctors did started to hurt and the security that watched over me became tighter.
“One night I was reading in my room when two men came in, one injected something in
me. I became dizzy and I couldn’t move my arms or legs. I couldn’t even open my mouth. They left and another man came in. He was wearing a mask. He took off his clothes, then mine. Then...then he...” Melian stopped talking and let her tears fall. Lania wanted her to stop but she knew there was more.
“This happened four times before I conceived. Then the strange drugs and experiments
came. They pumped me full of so much shit I don’t even think they knew what they were
doing. After this ‘treatment’ the beating’s started. I would just begin to heal and they
would do it again. During the last one they knocked me out. I woke up on that deserted
ship you guys found me on. Without a clue as to how I got there.”
Lania hugged her friend wordlessly. Both young women parted and went to bed. Lania
knew that no words would ease Melian’s pain. Only time would do that.
The next afternoon everyone was on the main deck. Dyro was playing with the twins. He
had made big plastic shapes for the twins to play with. Melian watched them happily.
Jared was doing something at his console while Kali and Lania were talking quietly.
A gasp from Melian had everyone’s attention instantly.
Eryk had dropped one of the star shaped toys on the floor. Both children stopped short
but, instead of crying Eryk simply pointed to the toy and it floated up into his hands. Both
he and his sister started laughing and smiling again as if nothing had happened.
The adults however, were speechless.
