Chapter 6
Several hours later Lania was going over the scan results with Melian and Kali. Jared and
Dyro had gone to bed.
“Surprisingly enough Melian, your baby is as healthy as can be. Despite your fast when
you were abandoned the baby suffered no ill effects. As far as I can tell anyway.” Lania
said all this in a business-like manner.
“However, “ Lania looked at Kali, “You said that Melian was two and a half months
along, correct?”
Kali nodded, “That is how long the baby has been growing inside of her.”
Lania nodded, “I think your right, but I checked the baby’s growth against a human chart
and the baby is in the fourth month of growth.”
Melian and Kali quietly digested this information.
“What does this mean , Lania?” Melian asked worriedly, rubbing her raised stomach
absently.
“I don’t know for sure.” Lania answered truthfully, concern etched on her features.
Over the next three weeks things went pretty smoothly. Jared and Dyro continually
scanned for Hunter ships, while the girls took stock of food and money. Everyone aboard
took full advantage of the Training room. Although Dyro wasn’t quite as enthusiastic as
everyone else. And Melian had to take it easy under Lania’s strict orders.
Lania also scanned Melian and the baby frequently. During one such scan she called
everyone into the Infirmary to discuss what she found.
“The baby is growing at an incredible rate. According to the Human growth chart she is
in her 8th month of pregnancy.”
Everyone was immediately concerned, “But you said three weeks ago that she was in her
fourth.” Jared protested.
Lania sighed and rubbed her already red eyes, “ I know that’s what I can’t explain.”
“Are you sure that she is human?” This surprisingly intelligent question came from Dyro.
Kali nodded slowly, “That is a possibility we hadn’t considered.”
Lania spoke again, “There is something else, at the rate of the baby’s growth Melian could give birth as early as next week.”
Everyone was quiet at this revelation. Kali was the first to come out of it, she immediately
started giving out orders, “Jared, Dyro. You two go look in the Food and Storage areas,
see what you can find for babies.” Lania, Melian and myself will move Melian into one of
the larger rooms. One with an adjoining door. We can convert the second room into a
nursery. It seems that we have less time to prepare than we thought.”
Everyone left quickly to do as they were told.
