If PC shuts down incorrectly, it will automaticly run ScanDisk. To disable this automatic function, perform the following steps.
IF THIS CHANGE IS DONE INCORRECTLY IT CAN DISABLE YOUR PC.
Proceed with caution and at your own risk.
Open C:\msdos.sys in notepad. (If you are lost or confused at this point use the other method)
Look for command line: AutoScan=1.
Change the 1 to 0.
If that command line does not exist, enter it at the bottom.
First download Tweak UI.
Install Tweak UI
Create a temporary folder and name it "tweakui"
Place the file you just downloaded called "tweakui.exe" in the folder you just created.
double-click the file "tweakui.exe".
choose to extract files in the current folder or the folder you just created.
All of the files are "tweakui", but with different file extensions or file types. One will have the extension or file type ".inf" If you do not see this, perform the following steps a thru f. If you can see the inf file type or extension, skip steps a thru f.
assuming you are already in "Windows Explorer" in Windows 98. XP may be a little different.
Click on "View".
Choose "Folder Options" .
Click on "View" tab.
Select "Show all files".
Then click "Apply" and "OK".
Double-Click the inf file.
This will place Tweak UI in your control panel.
If you performed steps a thru f, it may be a good idea to change the option back to protect you from someone accidentally deleting or changing an important system file that could disable or damage your PC. Perform steps a thru f again but on step e. select "Do not show hidden or system files" instead of "Show all files".
Click Start.
Choose "Settings"
Click on "Control Panel".
Double-click Tweak UI.
Click on "Boot" tab.
Under "Autorun ScanDisk" choose "Never" or whatever option you prefer.
