Dalene

Disclaimer: I don’t own Harry Potter.

Summary : This is a story about how Sirius copes with his fiancé, Dalene’s, death.

A/N- The beginning is from Dalene’s POV

The wind rustled thickly through the cloudy mist. I could barely see my hand in front of my face. Shivering slightly, I pushed a lock of stray blonde hair behind my ear.

I couldn’t turn back now. I couldn’t. Brushing a stray leaf away from my face, I stared silently at the black lake in front of me and the ominous grey sky above. I kept telling myself that it was me or him, me or him, as I walked forward. I could get expelled for going into the lake, but if I hesitated another second, Sirius could be plunging to a murky death.

Sirius. He had started this all. He was a really nice person, bold and funny. He had tamed the giant squid for me, when I expressed desire to see it. Every night after, we had met secretly out by the lake. But tonight, the water was thick and fatal. Lightning was illuminating the murky lake, making it look haunted and eerie.

I took a step forward, and felt water underneath my toes. It was now or never.

I knew Sirius was in the lake. He always came early, tickling the Giant Squid, doing dangerous stunts that made me scream. But he had never quite tamed that thing yet, and on a night like this....

I shivered, and suddenly my mind was made up. I stepped further into the water. I was getting goose bumps on my arms now. Even though the cold was killing me, I kicked off my shoes and light jacket, knowing it would be useless to try and swim with them.

I knew the lake very well by now, but was surprised by a sudden, monstrous drop. Even though I knew it was useless, my feet groped for the bottom. I tried to move my arms and legs to swim, but they were paralyzed with the endless cold. I realized with disdain that I would have to ditch my engagement ring in the water to be able to stay afloat. I dropped it, then went under and was immersed in the cold. Swim, Dalene, Swim! I urged myself, and soon I found my weak arms and legs doing an amateur dog paddle. Dog! Sirius was an Animagus to a dog! He could swim to shore. He’d be all right! And with a smile on my face, my head sunk slowly under the water, never to come back up.

Sirius Black made his way to the lake, grinning. He knew that Dalene would understand why he was late - he’d been getting sweets from Honeydukes. Sirius figured that he and Dalene could take out the canoe and party all night. They had reason to celebrate, too - they were engaged. Engaged! Sirius’s heart was flooded with joy, and happiness, and didn’t even mind the cold or that rain was pouring down like Wildfire. They had made plans, too - after this year of Hogwarts (which was their last, the 7th), they would get married and buy a little house by the sea that Dalene had been admiring. She wanted 8 children, and Sirius knew he would have no trouble complying with that wish.

“Dalene!” He called, “Dalene! I got tons of stuff! Butterbeer, Acid Pops -”

Sirius stopped abruptly. There was no Dalene on the grey beach. “Come on, Dalene!”He said, laughing,” This isn’t the time to play games.... it’s the time to play pranks!”

There was no answer. Sirius began to get worried. He waded out into the water a little.

“Dalene?”

He waded out further and then tripped on something, making him fall headfirst into the freezing lake. Sirius quickly stood up, coughing out some water. Then, suddenly, he saw what it was that he had tripped over. One of Dalene’s shoes. His heart stopped.

Slowly, Sirius searched the ground near where he had found the shoe, and came across another shoe, a heavy wet jacket, and a glitter of gold -

“The engagement ring!”said Sirius, and, for the first time in his life, the grin faded from his now sullen face. There was no trace of Sirius Black in the face of the person who was kneeling by the lake, sobbing.

“What have I done?” Sirius asked in a hoarse voice, “What have I done?”

Sirius blinked. He sat up. He was in dry clothing, sitting on a flat, thin bed in the hospital wing. At first he didn’t know why he was there. Then he remembered.

“Oh, you’re awake.” Madame Pomfrey said, glancing his way. “Professor Dumbledore wants to see you.”

Sirius nodded, at a loss for words. There was a sickening feeling in the pit of his stomach. He was going to be expelled for murder. Murder? But he hadn’t killed her - not really. But you were the one who kept inviting her to the lake! A little voice nagged in his head, You killed her! You killed her! You -

Professor Dumbledore pushed open the door.

“Hello, Sirius.” He said solemnly, “I-”

But Sirius interrupted him. “You don’t have to say any more, headmaster. I understand. You can expel me, professor.’

Dumbledore looked astounded. “Expel you?”

“I killed her.” Sirius said, staring down at Dumbledore’s shoes, too ashamed to look at his face.

Much to Sirius’ surprise, Dumbledore smiled. “I do not find you the type ot suddenly kill your friends, Sirius.”

“You - you don’t?” Sirius lifted his head.

“Of course I do not. But I am interested in why you think you killed her.”

Sirius launched into his story, ending in tears. Dumbledore bowed his head in respect.

“I did not know of your engagement,”Dumbledore said, “That makes the whole story so much different. And, Sirius, now that I know of it I will most definitely not expel you.” His eyes were twinkling.

“Thank you, Dumbledore. ”Sirius said, “But I have to go now. “

“Goodbye,”Dumbledore said, and then paused. “And good luck. ”He said, almost to himself.

Sirius wondered what he meant by that.

FIN.
