Alice Springs

Todd River Walking Track
Tuncks Store
Alice Springs Reptile Centre
National Pioneer Womens Hall of Fame

When I stepped off the plane in Alice Springs, I remember thinking this is not at all how I'd imagined things were going to be. Greated with intense dry heat (having left Melbourne three hours before where it was raining and 12 degrees to 42 degrees of dry heat) and I was surrounded by red, sandy landscapes - it was so different from anything I'd seen - I suddenly became very excited and curious - the country makes you want to learn it's history, explore and see as much as you can.

On my way to the hotel I gained a glimpse of the fantastic MacDonnell Ranges that surround Alice Springs. Once I'd settled and unpacked at my hotel I began to explore - this list below offers details of the worthwhile wonders / attractions that Alice Spring had to offer me.

Todd River Walking Track

This walking track will allow you to experience the landscape that surrounds Alice Springs. It will show you nature, Aboriginal culture and European culture. The track is about 4kms long and it took me about an hour to walk it, stopping continiously to take photos. The telegraph station is worth checking out.

Tuncks' Store

The Tuncks Store was constructed in the 1940's. It still has many of its original features and is a example of a old building that was common in central Australia, but now few remain.
Location: corner of Hartley Street and Stott.

Alice Springs Reptile Centre

Alice Springs Reptile Centre has a large reptile display with an extensive range of various reptiles including: Perentie Goanna, Frill Neck Lizards, Thorny Devils, large and small Pythons and a selection of the world's most venomous snakes like Inland Taipans, Brown Snakes, Death Adders, King Brown Snakes.

Informative talks are scheduled daily and may involve feeding and handling of the reptiles.

National Pioneer Womens Hall of Fame

The National Pioneer Women's Hall of Fame has a collection of stories, photo, and memorabilia that relates to pioneering women. There is also a reference library of books, video and audio cassettes that relates to Australian women's history.

The museum was created after certain individuals believed the contribution of women to the development of Australia had not been sufficiently recognised. A committee was formed in 1993 where the planning for this museum began and they haven't looked back since.
