THE THIN BLUE LINE
As I stand at the foot of my partner’s grave,
I think of all the lives he’s saved.
Although we were born of different mothers,
He was more than my partner, he was my brother.
Time after time, call after call,
We did all we could, we gave our all.
Until he, in final fight,
Took the bullet that took his life.
When I took the news to his wife,
She said not a word, took it in stride.
At his funeral, I held her hand,
“He wants us to go on, you understand.”
She nodded bravely, as the tears finally came,
As we said goodbye in the misting rain.
So I went back to policing, that’s what I do best,
And although I am grieving, anything else would be less.
Dedicated to the men and women of law enforcement,
