This program offers students the opportunity to complete their educational training in two Allied Health Careers:

NURSING ASSISTANT AND MEDICAL ASSISTANT
The first year the emphasis will be on nursing assistant and patient care skills. At the end of the clinical rotation the student can take the New York State Certification Exam for Nurse Assistants. Second year students will complete the Administrative and Clinical Medical Assistant curriculum. Medical Assisting is the fastest growing Allied Health Career.

RECOMMENDED PREREQUISITES
Concern for health and welfare of people, good judgment, good physical and mental health, good communication skills, alertness, flexibility, and enthusiasm.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Uniform, shoes, name pin, watch with second hand, physical examination with immunizations.

FIRST YEAR
Course content:The Health Occupations Core, will be covered and a clinical experience in an skilled nursing facility are of the student's experience. 100% employment after 1st year of the program, if certified by New York State as a Nurse Assistant.

SECOND YEAR
Course content: areas of instruction will include Medical Assisting skills such as anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, communication skills, data collection, patient preparation for exams, intro to pharmacology, scheduling patients, phone skills and insurance billing.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices, public health agencies, facilities for senior citizens, residences for the mentally handicapped.

FURTHER TRAINING POSSIBILITIES
Students can successfully enter the health care field at the completion of each level of course work. The medical career ladder allows the Health Care Workers to further their education, and to advance as far as his/her abilities, aptitude and interest warrant. The next step on the career ladder is the LPN program at the Career Tech Center at Herkimer BOCES. From there, students may enter RN programs at two or four year colleges.

Medical Assisting offers entry level skills or the student may choose to go on to a 2-year degree in Medical Assisting or Medical Records.
