Downloading Software
There are many software programs available free of charge (as well as many that include a fee) that are available by simply downloading them from the Internet.
Netscape Naigator and Internet Explorer are two examples. There is no need to purchase a CD to install them on your computer.
Software of every type are available for downloading through versiontracker or CNet
Two terms commonly associated with downloaded programs are "freeware" amd "shareware". Freeware means software that is available free of charge. Shareware means that a small fee will be charged. Often times, though, shareware is available for free trials with "your word" that you will send the creator money (usually in the form of check or money order) if you decide to keep the program.
Downloading Sites
Many times long papers or documents have to be downloaded in order to be viewed. This will usually happen automatically when the document is opened. A good clue that it is a file that must be downloaded is when it has [PDF] before the address.
Special software is often necessary to see these and your computer will warn you of you do not have the software. (The software can usually be downloaded free of charge.)
Downloading Music
With the recent shutting down of Napsters it is difficult to tell the future of downloading music from the Internet. One site that still has downloads is Morphius. The only problem with the site is that you have to buy one of their products before given access to download. Another site that is still helping to find the music what you want, though, is Real.com Real.com does not have music on their site, but they will direct you to a site that does have what you want. This will result in having to find the music again on that new site. It may be a long process, but eventually you will find what you're looking for!(If you do download music and your computer does not have the application to play it, the computer will give you a warning. If this happens go to downloads.com to get an appropriate program.)
