But this isn't supposed to be about Popeye and Olive Oyl, is it? It's really more about Valentine's Day, and because i'm the oh-so-interesting person that i am, i have found the real history of this date and out of the kindness of my heart (hey, after all it is valentine's day) i will put it here for you to see. and for your oh so added enjoyment, the St Valentines Day Massacre....no no, not the one you're thinking of, sorry. heh, i'm taking about the Al Capone one. Say!
Okay, so I know you're all dying (HA!) to know what the St. V-day's Massacre was all about. Well, lucky for you, jess is about weave that tell. Her first string of yarn begins like this:
Once, there was a guy named Al Capone, ever hear of him? Well, he wanted to kill this guy named Bugs Moran (who named their kid "Bugs?" how many people do you know named Bugs? You wont know any, especially by the end of this story). Anyway, Al here was smart, and decided to go down to florida, and be away from the action while this all occured. Somehow, he got one of his friends ("Machine Gun" McGurn) to be completely in control of the hit. Ingenious. McGurn rounded up a crew of out-of-towners, which consisted of "Killer" Burke (the leader), assisted by James Ray, John Scalise and Albert Anselmi who had been used in the murder of Frankie Yale (another scandalous tale). Joseph Lolordo was another player, as were Harry and Phil Keywell from Detroit's Purple Gang.
McGurn had a pretty good plan for what its worth. He had decided to trick Moran's gang into a bar, telling them whiskey was there at a cheap, and delicious, price. What guy doesnt want it that way? Eitherway, the whiskey delivery was to be made at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, February 14. McGurn's men would be waiting for them, dressed in stolen police uniforms and trench coats as though they were staging a raid. Wonderful, a bright guy this man. But even better, he wanted an alibi so he wouldnt get pinned for the crime. So he and his girlfriend checked into a hotel to do their business, and wait for things to happen as "fate would". Thats when things began to get messy.
The men thought that had spotted Bugs Moran's gang just behind a back alley. They did as they were told and staged the so-called raid. Then, the men barked a few orders, and made the Moran gang line against the wall (you know, thats how it's always done) but thats when they fired on the Bugs Moran a sawed-off shotgun plus a .45---man, it wasnt a pretty sight (as you can see above). It went alone just swimmingly...except for one problem: the whole target of the entire mission (Bugs Moran) was no where to be found.
And that my friends is the St. V-Day Massacre as it were. It was the most widely recieved publicity-wise for any gang ever recorded. It gained quite a bit...which lead to some interesting stuff...which we all can find (if we click on the link to
