Historic Cumberland Hall

Est. 1788

Your Future Owning America's Past

Historic Cumberland Hall (a.k.a. Old Stone Tavern) is rich with historic charm, style and presence. Located in the small village of Mooredale, 8 miles from the square of Carlisle, PA in Cumberland county, Cumberland Hall has been showcased in magazines, historic novels and national publications.

James Moore (1765-1813) and his family ran a milling business on nearby Yellow Breeches Creek. In 1788 Moore built this Georgian style, limestone tavern operating from 1794-1885. Most taverns of this era closed in the late 1830's when the railroad came through Cumberland County, yet Cumberland Hall remained open until 1885. From 1885 to 1945, it was operated as a county store and weigh station, and also again as a bar before and after prohibition. The original Moore estate sold the property in 1945 and it was resold in 1948. The current owners purchased the property in 1966. The stable has most recently been used as an antique shop.

Cumberland Hall, an elegant estate with a three story, 17 room, 9,900 sq. ft. house stands upon 10.8 acres containing a rebuilt stone/frame two-level stable (suitable for horses), a vintage brick toll house with fireplace, a contemporary detached carriage house style 2-car garage, and an in ground fenced 20x40 (32,000 gallon) pool. The house interior contains 10 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, 10 fireplaces, and a full basement (partially kept in the original unfinished state).
