In 1946 the Great Western Railway and Metropolitan Vickers designed a locomotive powered by a Gas-Turbine via a generator and electric motors. This locomotive was delivered in 1950, and became BR No 18000. After testing and trials it entered mainline service on the Western Region and was withdrawn in 1960.
