EUROPE 2000

We had made plans with our friends in the Czech Republic to have a family reunion in Moravia in the new Millenium. Since Pat and Sandy had been with us in the Czech Republic in 1999, they did not join us in this latest visit but Mike, Geoffrey, Don, Mandy and Sierra were all with us in this brave new century!

Marty and I arrived at Munich Airport on 29 July and spent the night at the Hotel Kempinski there. Don, Mandy and Sierra joined up with us the next morning and we drove to Regensburg.

Regensburg is a beautiful old city that once was a part of the Roman Empire! St Stephan's Cathedral is one of the most famous in Europe.

The Old Wurst Kuche has been in continuous operation for over 400 years! It serves only sausage, sour kraut and bier!

The sausage fits perfectly with the sour kraut and the cold bier is a fitting beverage!

Emperor Charles V - ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, enjoyed a relationship with the daughter of an artisan from Regensburg, Barbara Blomberg, and this dalliance resulted in a son whom the King later put in power in Austria. He was Don Juan of Austria and he became the greatest hero of his century! - Marty poses here with him.

Near the main postoffice of Regensburg.

When we left Regensburg, Mandy was navigator! She got us safely to Dinkelsbuhl

We are enjoying lunch at an outdoor restaurant near our hotel in Dinkelsbuhl

We pose with these horses in front of our hotel in Dinkelsbuhl.

We are enjoying a cold "bier" in front of our hotel in Dinkelsbuhl.

Sierra is enjoying the view of Dinkelsbuhl from the window of our 550 year-old hotel!

Don, Mandy and Sierra explore an old cathedral in Nordlingen.

Despite a rainy day, we are enjoying lunch on the main square of Nordlingen!

From Nordlingen we went to Kulmbach, Germany, to take part in their "bierwoche"
- a wonderful experience!

Same spot but this photo was taken by Geoffrey.

A view outside the Festival Building. Don bought Sierra this fancy balloon.

Jerry looks a bit intimidated by this "Haxn" (beef joint) that he ordered at a neat small restaurant on the main square in Kulmbach!

Our next stop was one of our favorite towns in the Czech Republic - Ceske Budejovice
(Budweis in German)!

Although we were staying at the Hotel Malo Pivovar on this trip, Marty and Mike relax at the cafe in front of the Hotel Zvon where we normally stay!

This horse on the main square in Budweis gets a little too friendly for Sierra's liking!

But Geoffrey took the horses in stride - he enjoyed this solo tour of downtown in this carriage!

On to Tasov to visit with Jiri and Bozena!

Bozena even baked a cake!

Sierra quickly makes friends with Argo II!

Sierra at the wonderful Castle Pernstejn.

Pernstejn is what you always thought medieval castles should be!

All three of our sons enjoy reading while we travel. Here Don catches a few paragraphs of his book in “our room” in Tasov.

Enroute to Frenstat, we stop in Olomouc where Mike checks out the city trams!

Hukvaldy is always a "must-see" stop for each of our three sons. Here Don and Mandy pose for a photo by Mike!

Sierra and Mandy at Hukvaldy!

Marty enjoys reading her book on the balcony of our room at the Vlcina Hotel in Frenstat!

But all good things must end - we are leaving to return to Tasov!

We visit George and Bozena's good friends - the Skrobak family - in the village of Kobyli.
Frantizek is a great winemaker!

Sierra at the neat village museum at Kobyli where we also visited the Skrobak family!

The beautiful castle at Lednice!

On the beautiful grounds of the castle at Lednice.

Back to Tasov where George gives instruction on how to find a good mushroom!

All great holidays must end - Mike, Geoffrey, Don, Mandy, and Sierra get ready to leave Tasov!

Another photo of the impending departure!

Marty and I stayed on a few days with our great friends, Bozena and Jiri!
