Cowboy Take Me Away

I said I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly

I wanna sleep on the hard ground
In the comfort of your arms
On a pillow of bluebonnets
In a blanket made of stars

Oh it sounds so good to me

Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can
Into the wild blue
Set me free oh I pray
Closer to heaven above and
Closer to you closer to you

I wanna walk and not run
I wanna skip and not fall
I wanna look at the horizon
And not see a building standing tall

I wanna be the only one
For miles and miles
Except for maybe you
And your simple smile

Oh it sounds good to me
Yeah it sounds so good to me

Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can
Into the wild blue
Set me free oh I pray
Closer to heaven above and
Closer to you closer to you

I said I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
Oh it sounds so good to me

Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can
Into the wild blue
Set me free oh I pray
Closer to heaven above and
Closer to you closer to you

Closer to you
Cowboy take me away
Closer to you

His simple smile. That’s my favorite thing about him. It’s so sweet and genuine. The thought ran through my head as I climbed into the passenger seat of his truck for what seemed like the eight millionth time. I looked appreciably at him, and of course he returned my look with that smile. It could melt my heart in a split second.

“So, where are we going?” I asked.

“I don’t know, I thought you had that planned” he told me looking over with that smile plastered all over his face again.

“Shut up Tay, I really hate when you try to annoy me like that” I said giving him a playful shove.

“Okay, how about I just drive, and we’ll see where we end up” he suggested. I narrowed my eyes and gave him a skeptical look. “Oh come on Em, it’ll be fun, trust me.”

“Last time I trusted you, we got lost over in Broken Arrow” I reminded him.

“Yeah, that was fun wasn’t it” he grinned, putting the car into drive and starting down the road. I knew he was going to completely disregard my statement, and get us lost again.

We made our way outside of Tulsa, and drove down a country road chit chatting about our lives and times. We had just taken a turn down another dirt road when the conversation lulled a bit. I couldn’t believe that Taylor still knew where we were. I sure didn’t.

The hot July sun was beating down on my face through the window. I turned away from it, and caught Taylor looking over at me with that smile again. He turned away shyly and looked back at the road.

I took this time to study him. Sure Taylor had been my boyfriend for a year and a half, I knew everything possible about his looks, but sometimes you can look further and find more unspoken depth.

Today he was wearing his favorite jeans, which of course I hated. They were faded and dirty, but he claimed they were comfortable and that of course was what counted to him. Accompanying his jean was a simple white tee shirt. I smiled thinking that all he needed was a piece of straw hanging out his mouth, and the right hat, and he could be a cowboy.

I guess I sort of fantasized about him being a cowboy sometimes. There was something about it that oddly turned me on. I usually found cowboys sexy. I guess it’s just the country girl inside of me. I don’t know what it was about them, apart from the fact that they just seemed laid back and carefree, yet they still had the rugged and ruffled look about them. I suppose I imagined Taylor like that sometimes, and I couldn’t imagine a cowboy any sexier than him.

I guess I got so caught up in my daze I didn’t even realize when Taylor stopped and parked the car. “Earth to Emily” I heard him say from far away.

“Oh sorry, I was kind of in a daze” I said sheepishly as I broke away from my fantasy.

“Thinking about your studly boyfriend?” he asked. I stuck my tongue out at him. “Well anyway, we’re here” he then said.

“Here?” I asked. “I thought you said you didn’t know where we were going.”

“I didn’t, but this place looks like a nice place for a picnic, so I thought I’d stop” he explained.

“Picnic?” I asked.

“Yeah” he gestured to the back of his truck. I looked behind us, and found a whole picnic basket packet for today. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t noticed it yet.

“Aw Taylor honey, that’s such a sweet idea” I told him, my heart melting yet again. He seemed to have that effect on me often.

We climbed out of the truck and entered the vast, stretching field Taylor had parked next too. Finding a nice place to settle in he spread out a blanket, and we sat to eat our meal he had prepared. Sometimes I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have such a wonderful person in my life.

After we were done eating Taylor lay back on the ground and coaxed me into his arms. He ran in fingers gently through my hair, and sang softly to me, knowing it was my favorite thing he ever did. We often sang to each other, it was a relaxing way to bring us closer.

Without realizing I fell asleep, and woke up to darkness. Taylor was asleep next to me. There I was sleeping on the hard ground in the comfort of his arms with a pillow of blue bonnets and a blanket made of stars. I could have stayed there for hours.

“Emily” his sudden voice startled me a little. I hadn’t realized that he woke up.

“Yeah?” I asked.

“What were you thinking about earlier in the truck?” he asked.

“A song” I told him.

“Will you sing it to me?” he asked.

Softly I started my song. “Cowboy take me away; fly this girl as high as you can in to the wild blue. Set me free oh, I pray. Closer to heaven above and closer to you.” I inched my mouth closer to his. “Closer to you” I whispered, and finally touched my lips to his own.

We both smiled then. I knew I was the only one for miles and miles, except for him, and his simple smile.
