Web
Using a text edior to build a website in HTML is covered in this project. Familiarity with Windows operating system is not neccesary, and will be integrated into the lessons. The website will be managed throughout the semester through a file management system called FTP. Student work for the semester is uploaded to the classroom server, and is archived for future reference.
Web Research (r1)
During this project, students research a topic of thier choosing that relates to the subject of computers, internet and communications. To make this research based website, students use Graphical User Interface HTML editing software.
Mendocino
The Mendocino Motor is a solar powered, Magnetically Levitating electric motor. Students build a wooden base, wind the coils for the motor, solder solar panels and assemble the motor with magnets. When completed, the motor runs for as long as it is in the presence of either sunlight or incandescent light.
Mendocino Research (r2)
The mendocino motor has many different ideas associated with it, including magnetism, solar energy, electricity, and woodworking. Each of these topics has people, processes and materials that can be researched to great intellectual gain. Each student chooses their own topic of interest and completes the research as a homework assignment. Finished research projects are posted in the student work section of the classroom intranet server.
Robotics
Students build a robot and control it through a program that they make. The programming of the robot is very powerful and is similar to the language used by NASA.
Robotics Research (r3)
There is fascinating work being done in space, undersea, in manufacturing and the military that makes extensive use of robots. Choose an area and expand your knowledge.
Computer Aided Design
Students make CAD drawings in one of two areas of study: Architectural or Solids. In the architectural component, students create scale accurate drawings of buildings using the DataCad software package. These drawings can also be used to create web based or other display documents.
CAD Research (r4)
Students choose an area of study in either architecture, home systems, manufacturing design or another related topic.
Note: Each of the four major units are intended to be completed in a half term. It is possible that each individual class can work either faster or slower on the projects. This can affect timing. If neccesary, the order of the last three units can be changed.
