The first phase where Cell Division begins is called "Interphase." In the end of interphase, the number of chromosomes inside the nucleus duplicates. Chromosomes are rod like shaped cell structures that directs the activities of a cell and passes on the traits of a cell, to a new cell. It's located in the nucleus. Each chromosome and its sister chromosome is attached at the middle known as the "centromere." 1 rod on a chromosome is called a "chromatid." In fact, if you were to see this phase occur under a microscope, you wouldn't see the rod like structures. You would see thread like coils known as "chromatin."
