In order to have the number of cells increase, and for an organism grow, the organism must undergo Cell Division. Cell Division is the process when one cell divides into two cells. Each new cell, called a "daughter cell", is identical to the other daughter cell, and to the parent cell. Cell Division starts in the first phase called "Interphase" and ends in the sixth, and last phase called "Cytokinesis." The process itself when the nucleus of a cell divides into two nuclei, and the formation of two new daughter cells begins is called Mitosis. Mitosis starts in the second phase called "Prophase" and ends in the fifth phase called "Telophase." You can learn more about Mitosis by clicking on the link on the main page.
