Character History
Ulindrindar grew up in the small gnomish community of granitehome which was located in the dragonjaw mountains. Third born
son in a family of 6, his early life was unremarkable for the most part. The major exception was when he was a meager 28
years old, he was badly mauled by a cave bear. Having barely survived the encounter, he was confined to bed for more than a
month. His wounds healed, but his good humor never quite returned. Having already been considered somewhat ugly due to his
unusually small(for a gnome) nose, his problems were compounded by his scars. Of course, the other gnomes were far too kind
to mention the matter.

Times continued for the young gnome, and though he learned the trade of appraisal and sale of goods for the family run tool
shop, he was bored with his life and sought out the trades of illusioncraft and combat. He always dreamed of becoming a
breachgnome, the ever present defenders of their small community. Specialized in defending the small and heavily fortified
entrances to gnome communities, breachgnomes are considered the fighting elite of gnomes everywhere. So, as it would happen,
Ulin spent his time learning the basics of illusion magic from the local hedge wizard, a slightly insane little gnome by the
name of Qualyo, and studying the use of the crossbow and close quarter weaponry of the breachgnomes. To pay his way and fit
into gnomish society a bit better, he learned the delicate trade of gem cutting as well.

Things went well for Ulin as far as he was concerned. He was a bit of an outcast, but he was also highly respected among
the community. He became an official breachgnome reservist and continued to work in his family store, though he spent more
time cutting gems than cataloguing tool quality - a task that had become far too easy to be entertaining. Still, he was not
quite like other gnomes. Things continued in relative peace and harmony, and he gained greater prestige when he came to the
aid of the city defenders several times over to defend their mountain homes from the goblins that plagued the area like so
many jackals.

His quiet life ended during his 115th year, shortly after reaching maturity. The nearby Red wizards of Thay had decided to
raid granitehome to finance their unending attacks against nearby Rasheman. Caught in the middle of the conflict, the gnomes
had little chance to face off against the powerful magic and summoned beasts the red scourge brought forth. The fight went
badly for the gnomes, and realizing the fight was hopeless, Ulin, who was not on duty at the time, chose to save as many of
his people as he could. Using his knowledge of illusions, he managed to get a small group of villagers past the assault
force. The Red wizards, being far more interested in pillaging the village gem stores, were all too happy to let the few
gnomes past. Disaster struck once again however, as Ulin, as his group was making good their escape, happened to overhear a
young Red Wizardress laughing to a friend about how their master had "cleaned out the rat hole" with a cloud of poison gas.
Ulin utterly lost control of himself. Most gnomes abhor bloodshed, however, not a single tear rolled down Ulin's too small
nose as the magician slid off his bloodied dagger. Still, his carelessness revealed the position of his group when she let
out a gurgling cry with her dying breath. In the ensuing escape through a field of tall grass, two young gnomish children
were overtaken and slaughtered by the red wizards. This is a mistake Ulin has never forgiven himself for, and once he had
the remainder of his refugees to the relative safety of a nearby dwarven settlement, he took his leave of his people.

CHARACTERISTICS:

As he is now, Ulin is more like a dwarf than a gnome. Though he tries to act jovial and carefree like other gnomes, it
more often than not comes off as forced. He has, however, been known to perform a good natured practical joke or two if spirits are down. He is never impulsive and is always careful to keep himself in check. Ulin still considers himself a breachgnome, if perhaps a disgraced one. He tries to avoid his own people, at least in the long term. Though no one holds a grudge, Ulin considers himself to be little more than an outcast to his own people. Still, his good nature and strong sense of justice have motivated him to hinder all evil he finds. Ulin has developed a loathing for Red Wizards altogether unheard of in other gnomes, and seeks to undermine their efforts whenever possible.

COMBAT:

Ulin prefers to stay out of the front lines, instead, he prefers to fire his crossbow into enemy lines as well as sow confusion among enemy ranks. Ulin is better than most at close combat, preferrably in tight areas like narrow tunnels where his small weapons and stature serve as an advantage against larger creatures. Still, Ulin is not above wielding his dagger to protect himself and any other vulnerable allies. Most of all though, Ulin realizes his limitations and will avoid fighting hand to hand if at all possible.

APPEARANCE:

In his appearance, Ulin is ugly, though not to an extreme degree. He tries to compensate for this by keeping himself clean whenever possible. His numerous scars give his skin a mangled look in places, particularly his neck and left shoulder. He tends to dress in the most appropriate means possible, favoring durability above all else. He has brown hair, a beard that tapers to a neat point, and gray, often lifeless seeming eyes that rarely betray his true feelings. By gnomish standards, he has a tiny nose. This makes him look more like a small dwarf than a gnome.

COMPANIONS: Ulin summoned a weasel for a familiar recently. He named the small creature Renon and has only begun his
relationship with the young weasel. Still, Ulin has already developed a tendency to spoil Renon with treats and comforts
more suited to a noble's cat than an adventuring animal.
