Someone
had to do it and it happened to be the ISP which took the lead in
taking the sport of squash to the districts as required by the state
government to give it recognition. The Kolhapur Open, sponsored by
Ugar Sugar Works, had a good response from the locals as 12 players
from kolhapur and Sangli participated. In the beginning the locals
were not very enthusiastic as they thought getting 13 and 14 points
handicap, they began winning some opening rounds and began liking
the pattern of handicap scoring. The tournament had major upset as
seeded players from Mumbai like Niraj Shirgaokar, Mihir kapoor, Amit
Chinoy, Chandrakant Pawar, Santosh More and Avinash Bhavnani fell by
the kapadia, who developed the liking for squash just year earlier ,
beating the under-19 champ from Mumbai, Mihir Kapoor, in three
straight games. The winner was richer by Rs.4,000, while the runner
up got Rs.2,000. The team event between Kolhapur and ISP was well
fought. The teams were level two-all.

had and let off the hook veteran Chandrakant Pawar who paved for the Leela
the triumph over Otters Club ‘A’ in the semi-finals of the inaugural
