Interpertation of Poemof death.Line 2 portrays death a friendly character, instead as a grim and scary figure. And that their meeting is more of a date, then the end of her life. Line 3 + 4: Line 3 shows how her date with death is not scary, but almost enjoyable. They aretaking a leisurely carriage ride, and Immortality is also in the carriage, which helps the idea of enjoyment, not death. Line 5: One interpretation of riding along without haste is that Death is not affected by time, since he is not part of our world. Line 6-8: She stopped her busy life, and went for a calm carriage ride. And line 8 also shows that Death was polite, which further shows the mood of a date. Lines 9-12: Death and his passengers are traveling past simple, everyday things. One meaning of these lines is that the woman is recalling childhood memories, and maybe changing the mood of the poem. Now instead of a calm ride, she is heading toward death, and the mood is more depressing. And her life ends with the end of the day, passing the setting sun. Lines 13-16: These lines carry on the sad mood and death is more eminent. The carriage has now passed the sun, and everything is dark and cold. The cold conditions suggest that the woman is now dead, and dressed in a gown, and only kept warm by a thin scarf. (Lines 15 + 16). Line 17-20: These lines describe the final destination of the carriage. They have finally reached the cemetery. These lines also show that the carriage has actually been a hearse, which is why it was riding along so slow. The house, ends up being her grave. Her tombstone is barely visible, slightly protruding out of a hill of earth. However, her journey is not over yet. This "house" is only for her body, not her soul. Line 21 + 22: The comparison between days and centuries shows that her soul is not effected by time anymore. Since she is dead, days and hours are meaningless. Line 23-24: Line 23 suggests that she assumed the horses were going to lead her to eternity. And then she realizes that Immortality is sitting in the carriage still. back |
