Cardinals vs. Opponents

In 113 years (89 seasons) through 2007, Mayville High School has met with teams from 81 schools on the gridiron. Here are the results...

Horicon High School: 83 Games (1895-2011); 61 wins, 18 losses, 4 ties;
The Marsh Bowl - Our rival from across the Horicon Marsh. Some of the best games in this series include the 1932 upset that ended Mayville's 28-game undefeated streak, the 1968 game that gave Mayville its first title in 24 years, and the 1980 game that reunited these teams in the Flyway Conference. Both schools were among the original members of the Little Ten Conference in 1926, and remained together through 1969. Horicon won conference championships in 1959, and 1969. During the 1970's they competed in different conferences until Mayville joined the Flyway in 1980. The schools were split up again after the 1998 season. Coach Roger Meyer earned his 200th career victory during the 2002 season. The Marsh Bowl is set to return in 2006.

Since I have no game results between 1896 and 1917, the series is probably closer to 100 games old. We know both schools fielded teams during this era. Any help in finding old game results would be greatly appreciated!

Ripon High School: 70 games (1922-2008); 40 wins, 26 losses, 4 ties

The 2005 Cardinals battled with the #1 ranked Tigers to the bitter end, but came up short on the scoreboard. Rick Kelm's Tigers went on to win the division 4 state title with an undefeated season. The biggest win of the Steve Brickson era came on October 8, 2004 when his Cardinals traveled to Ripon and ended the 20-game winning streak of the Ripon Tigers with a 35-24 win. The #1 ranked Tigers also had a 20-game home winning streak snapped. The 2003 Ripon Tigers had a talented, powerful, senior-dominated team that ran over 14 opponents on their way to an undefeated, state championship season. Kelm has built a confident, competitive program. Kelm's 2002 Tigers met the Cardinals in Waupun and ended the school's 16-game skid vs. Mayville, with a 36-35 victory. Prior to 2002, the Cardinals dominated the series for 25 years. Ripon was also an original member of the Little Ten Conference and remained through 1969. Ripon won Little Ten titles in 1932, 1936, 1937, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1947, and 1949. The Cardinals and Tigers shared the 1936 crown with 6-0 records, because they did not meet that year. The schools were reunited in the current East Central Flyway Conference - Lakes Divison in 1999, and shared the conference championship in 2004 with 5-1 records. The schools parted ways after 2006 with another conference realignment, but were matched up in the first round of the 2008 playoffs. A classic blow-by-blow match-up was finally settled when the Tigers gained a 28-22 advantage and the Cardinals simply ran out of time. battle.

Waupun High School: 65 Games (1895-2005); 34 wins, 23 losses, 5 ties
136-0, Ouch! That's how this rivalry started... Or, is it? Both schools competed in the Dodge County Athletic Association in 1895. A score is missing from October 26th for both, where all others are accounted for. This was probably the first meeting between Mayville and Waupun. I'm sure there's at least a dozen more between 1896 and 1917. Since 1921, this has been an even rivalry, except since the late 1960's, the series has tipped in the Cardinals favor. In 2004, the Wariors finally snapped Mayville's 18-game win streak against the Warriors that dated back to 1980. Waupun's Warriors, or "Yellowjackets", won the first Little Ten football title in 1926, and also remained in the league through 1969. The Warriors also won conference titles in 1960, 1963 and 1965. The schools were reunited in 1999 in the ECFC Lakes Division.

Berlin High School: 44 Games (1924 - 2005); 25 wins, 16 losses, 3 ties;
Noennig's best mark of the 2005 season was a 47-6 rout of the Indians, on a night when nearly everything went right for his Cardinals. The Cardinals regained control of the series with a win in 2004. Berlin snuck away with a 15-14 win in 2003, thwarting Mayville's last minute drive near the end zone. This series includes one playoff game, won by Berlin in 1989. Berlin was also an original Little Ten member that remained through 1969, and was also reunited with the others in the ECFC Lakes Div. in 1999.

Columbus High School: 37 Games (1925 - 2004); 25 wins, 11 losses, 1 tie;
The Cardinals vs. Cardinals series! From an old conference rivalry to recent playoff games, Mayville and Columbus have had some great battles over the years.

Beaver Dam High School: 32 Games (1920 - 1965); 13 wins, 17 losses, 2 ties;
In the early years of the Little Ten Conference, Mayville and Beaver Dam posted some hard fought battles for the conference crown. Our last win against the Beavers was over 50 years ago. Henry Derleth's teams of the 1950's and 60's dominated the Little Ten and probably could have won some state titles, if given the chance.

Hartford Union High School: 29 Games (1933 - 1968); 18 wins, 11 losses;

Oconomowoc High School: 26 Games (1922-1965); 10 wins, 14 losses, 2 ties;

West Bend High School: 25 Games (1929-1962); 12 wins, 13 losses;

Campbellsport: 28 Games (1980-2008); 23 wins, 5 losses;
The Cards & Cougars met twice in 2003, early in the season and again in the opening round of the playoffs. The Cardinals earned a difficult sweep. However, the Cougars got their revenge in the 2004 rematch and again in 2005.

Lomira High School: 27 Games (1980-2008); 24 wins, 3 losses; This rivalry became bitter from the very beginning in 1980, when the Cardinals swooped in and took the Lions rightful place at the top of the conference. In 1981, the Lions returned the favor coming to Mayville and handing the Cardinals their worst beating to a Flyway Conference opponent, a 49-24 defeat. The Cardinals and Lions claimed or shared every conference championship between 1980 and 1985. In 2008, the Lions forfeited its entire schedule.

North Fond du Lac High School: 25 Games (1922-2008); 23 wins, 2 losses; When Brian Harney announced his retirement, after 23 seasons as North Fondy's head coach, he recalled his 1990 team's win over Mayville as a high point. His statement in the Fond du Lac Reporter complimented both the Mayville program, and his players, who qualified for the playoff for the first time in school history that season.

Laconia High School: 22 Games (1980-2008); 20 wins, 2 losses;

Markesan High School: 19 Games (1980-2005); 17 wins, 3 losses;

Hartland Arrowhead High School: 12 Games (1967-1979); 7 wins, 5 losses; A Scenic Moraine Conference opponent of the 1970's. Arrowhead has since become one of the powerhouse programs of southeastern Wisconsin, winning 3 state championships.

Pewaukee High School; 12 Games (1970-2001); 10 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie;

Slinger; 11 Games (1970-1996); 8 wins, 3 losses;

St. Mary's Springs: 14 Games (1994-2008); 7 wins, 7 losses;
This is a great new rivalry for Mayville. Springs, a perennial private school powerhouse has been coached by Bob Hyland for 38 seasons, the all-time leader in coaching victories in Wisconsin football history. Springs has been ranked among the top 5 in the state in seven of the past ten seasons, and won the Division 5 state title in 2002 and was runner-up in 2003.The 2004 match-up was a hard fought battle. Unfortunately, the Ledgers prevailed in overtime. The 2006-2007 Cardinals did something never before achieved in this rivalry's history; beat Springs two years in a row. In 2008, the Ledgers battled for a 14-7 Homecoming win.

Kettle Moraine; 10 Games (1970-1979); 10 wins, 0 losses;

Wautoma: 11 Games (1995-2005); 10 wins, 1 loss;

Grafton; 10 Games (1970-1979); 6 wins, 4 losses;

Germantown; 10 Games (1970-1979); 3 wins, 7 losses; The Warhawks, under coach Phil Datka won four Scenic Moraine championships in the 1970's. The Warhawks came into Mayville on October 18th, 1979 as the #1 ranked team in the state. The Cardinal defense contained Jerry Vance to one touchdown, with the PAT failing. A Lucky Wurtz touchdown was negated by a holding penalty and the Warhawks escaped town with a 6-0 win. Datka's Warhawks advanced to the state title game in 1979, losing to Beaver Dam. He has since won three WIAA state championships.

Plymouth: 9 Games (1938-1951); 5 wins, 4 losses;

Winneconne, 7 games (1999-2005): 5 wins, 2 losses;

Brodhead/Juda, 5 games (1994-2008): 1 win, 4 losses;

Brodhead/Juda is one of the state's premier co-op football programs. The roots of this program dates back to the two schools going head-to-head in 8-man football. The battle of the Cardinals began as a play-off match up and later became a great season-opener for the great programs.

Concordia, Milwaukee, 4 games (1966-1969): 2 wins, 2 losses;

Mukwanago, 4 games (1955-1958): 1 win, 3 losses;

Reedsville, 3 games (1992-1994): 3 wins, 0 losses;
All three meetings are playoff games.

MHS Alumni, 3 games (1921-1924): 2 wins, 1 loss;

All three meetings are playoff games.

Wayland Academy: 3 Games (1921-1925): 0 wins, 2 losses, 1 tie;

New Holstein, 3 games (1969-2006); 3 wins, 0 losses;

Menasha, 2 games (1922-1971); 2 wins, 0 losses;
The 96-0 thrashing in 1922 remains as Mayville's largest margin of victory ever. I'd love to see the box score for that one!

Milwaukee Marshall, 2 games (1993-1994): 2 wins, 0 losses;

Sheboygan South, 2 games (1999-2000): 2 wins, 0 losses;

Winnebago Lutheran, 2 games (2006-2007) 2 wins, 0 losses;

Juneau, 2 games (1895-1924): 1 win, 1 loss;
Juneau, which is now Dodgeland High School was actually once a powerhouse football school. In 1895, Juneau, Horicon, Mayville, Beaver Dam and Fox Lake competed for the Dodge County Athletic Association Championship. Juneau High School won the championship banner by shutting out all their opponents. My guess is that these teams met a few more times before parting ways. Mayville has never played Dodgeland, the re-alignment of the former Juneau, Reeseville and Lowell districts.

Whitewater, 2 games (1953-1954): 1 win, 1 loss;

Baldwin-Woodville, 2 games (1992-1994): 1 win, 1 loss;

St. Francis, 2 games (1998-2004): 1 win, 1 loss;

Milwaukee South Division, 2 games (1923-1924): 0 wins, 0 losses, 2 ties;
This series is most intiguing. Two games with no scoring. In 1923, the South team came to Mayville bringing three squads of players. They were apparently expecting a blowout in their favor and wanted to get the younger players some experience. Our Cardinals had the only real scoring opportunity near the end of the game, but failed. The following year, our team traveled to the south side of the brew city to do battle in a game ending with the same result. Moral victories for the farm boys?

DeForest, 2 games (1980-1982): 0 wins, 2 losses;
Our first playoff appearance in 1980. The '82 Norskis won the state title.

Waukesha, 1 game (1922): 1 win, 0 losses;

Fox Lake, 1 game (1895): 0 wins, 1 loss;

Oshkosh, 1 game (1922): 0 wins, 1 loss;

On October 22, 1922 the Ironmakers of Mayville traveled to Oshkosh to meet the Chiefs, touted as the best football team in the state, in front of a large crowd. The Chiefs took an early 12-0 lead, but Mayville fought back to close the scoring gap, but Oshkosh prevailed 18-12. Many of these athletes met again on the hardwood in March 1923, for the championship of the Oshkosh District tournament. Again the Chiefs won by a narrow margin, 21-19, advancing to the state tournament in Madison. Oshkosh finished their 1922-23 basketball season as the state runner-up. In an unusual gesture of respect, the Oshkosh Northwestern praised Mayville for its level of play despite the loss.
