To install CodeGuide on your computer first make sure you have downloaded the correct distribution file for your operating system. Afterwards extract the contained files to any desired directory. You will then be able to start CodeGuide for the first time:
Under Windows use the CodeGuide.exe file. Please note that at the first startup this file might install VM components on your computer. Under Windows NT this requires that you are logged on as Administrator. Also it requires to restart your computer after the installation. This has to be done only once.
Under UNIX you can start CodeGuide with the CodeGuide.sh file.

Please note: To use CodeGuide you have to install at least one Java Development Kit (JDK) on your computer. After the first startup CodeGuide needs to know where your JDKs and Java libraries (like Swing) are installed. For this reason a dialog will appear which asks you to specify the disk drive or directory where this software is installed. Under Windows it might be appropriate to choose your local hard disk here.

JDK and library search dialog

CodeGuide will descend into the chosen directory recursively. This process can last some time. Afterwards all found JDKs and libraries are configured in CodeGuide and can be used easily. This configuration can be changed whenever necessary (see Configured JDKs).

After the JDKs and libraries have been configured CodeGuide will ask you to create your first project. A dialog comes up where you can specify the kind of the project (Application, Applet, Servlet, etc.), the name of the project, the JDK you want to develop the project for and the directory where all the files which belong to the project will be stored.

New project

After the project is created the installation is complete. You can now begin to work with CodeGuide and test all of its features. When you exit CodeGuide it will store how you left it and will appear just as you left it when you start it again.
