YWIRLS UNIQUE STEPPERS
STEP is a percussive, choreographed form of dance traditionally carried by the
Historically Black Greek Lettered Organizations (BGLO's). It's origins are in Africa. Within
the city of Boston, step is a competetive performance art. Under YWIRLS, the
Unique Steppers practice, perform and compete in step. This program provides
the young women with the opportunity for public performance, teamwork and competition.
Participants perform at community events, Boston's annual Celebrity Basketball Jam benefitting
the Reggie Lewis Center, the annual Step For Life Competition sponsored by the
Greater Boston Step Association as well as semi-professional football games. The focus of
this program is teamwork and expanding the comfort zone. This is done through experiential
opportunities. Participants must maintain an academic average of at least a B.
