Studies show that the most common anti-germ agent in antibacterial
soaps may cause problems down the line by introducing new germs.
Scientists studying Triclosan, the germ killer in these soaps,
believe the ingredient could actually encourage microbacteria to mutate.
The research shows that Triclosan could allow some germs to survive,
and scientists believe the bacteria that doesn't get killed could
come back stronger.
Triclosan-containing products are growing in number & you may already
be using them to wash your dishes, clean your hands, moisturize your
skin, and even brush your teeth.
If you are concerned, government scientists suggest using products that
don't contain Triclosan. Good old-fashioned soap will bind with dirt
and germs and wash them away.
Should you stop using these products and throw them away? Not necessarily.
If you are living with a child or a person with a compromised immune system,
they may be valuable for you. Otherwise, microbiologists think Triclosan is
unneeded and potentially worrisome.
And remember, humans simply weren't intended to live in a sterile environment.
