Editor's Preface

Contained here are all the speeches which appeared in Carl Schurz's book, Speeches of Carl Schurz. Not all are from that source. The original 1865 volume which I saw was in very brittle and delicate shape, so I took as few speeches as possible from it. I have mostly relied on copies from later sources, mainly Speeches, Correspondence and Political Papers of Carl Schurz. No sources are cited for the speeches in the 1865 volume and I assume they all were taken from the newspaper since all of them have embedded audience reactions. The audience reaction component is sometimes preserved and sometimes not in the versions that follow. The book also used an odd format for quoting blocks of text, each line in the block preceded by an open quote, which I have not used here.
