Tournament in Review


Beverly Fairs Well at Regionals

Newspaper Press Release:

On March 16, teams from throughout the North Suburban area met at Salem High School for the Regional competition of Destination Imagination.

Over 100 team participated in this region, from elementary, middle and High school levels. Teams worked for over 5 months to solve one of 5 long term challenges.

Beverly High School led the way with two teams sent to the competition placing first in their respective challenges. Emily Lavadiere, Sara Atkinson, Jamie Mylander, Caroline McAvoy and Amy Marcucci placed first in the Improvisation Challenge. The team's presentation was homurous and featured the art work of Salvatore Barba.

Bill Raymond, Andrew Walker,Kyle Theriault and Mike Andruskiewicz teamed up with Jenn Ames, Sarah Diehl and Casey Thomas to place won top honors in the Technical challenge. In addition to a win, this team was also honored with a Rennaisance Award for outstanding achievement in engineering, design and performance for their solution which featured a working hovercraft and a script written entirely in Shakespearian verse.

Cove Elementary School won the elementary division of the technical challenge. Kate Reed, Stafanie Harris, Anna Roy Anna Reed, Lauren McGinnis, Clare Stanton and Lindsey McLAughlin designed and built a vehicle that utilized a weight mechanism to propel it. Their presentation included a colorful backdrop and costumes.

The Cove School team of Jessie Hough, Michael Rich, John Gallagher, Jonathan Cohen, Jackie Cohen, Sam Hough and Stefannie Bancucci were honored with an award for outstanding creativity in their approach to their instant challenge.

Hannah Elementary School placed first in their Improvisation challenge. The team had excellent team work which contributed to the teams success.

Briscoe Middle School placed one team in their a challenge called Standid. Katie Donohue teamed up with Cove students Emily Craighead,, Olivia Jones, Ali Hartman and Shannon Walker and Waring student Rachel Kalman. Their solutuion told the story of three weary travelers getting strandid on Mount Olympus.

Briscoe students Emma and Abby Siemasko, Ellen Cooper, Matt Marquart Stefano Basso Julie Levin-Rector and Ali Lebel placed third in their challenge called On Holiday. Audience members commented on this teams humor and teamwork.

Finally, theWaring School won the structure challenge at the middle school level. the team built two towers out of balsa wood, paper, and glue to test for strength. the team also wrote a clever skit on the contrast between a land of white and a land of color.

In total, Beverly will send 6 out of a possible 15 teams to the State Tournament at Worcester PolyTechnical Institute next Saturday.

Even teams who did not place in the top three or recieve an award did well. There ceativity, hardwork, and teamwork was exciting and made the Beverly Schools proud. Congratulations to ALL of the 2002 Beverly Destination ImagiNation participants.
