Wishing Upon A Star

September 16
Hurricane

Hurricane Floyd is upon us, but it’s not really a hurricane anymore. It’s a tropical storm.

Basically it’s just a pain.

We’ve been listening to the weather reports and tracking the progress of the storm as it’s made its way up the East Coast, but it’s fizzled out. What we have now are miserable driving rains that are blinding if you’re trying to drive. The puddles are deep enough to swim in, in a few places. This is partly due to the potholes that were never repaired over the summer.

Some schools systems released the kids early today, but we hung on for the day. They have taken the precaution of getting the snow chain ready. (The snow chain is how we let each other know if school has been cancelled; each person calls another until the entire faculty has been notified. This is done incase someone doesn’t see the notice when it’s posted on television or announced on the radio. Usually the calls are made around 5 a.m., giving the lovely option of going back to sleep after the calls are made.

I really doubt school will be cancelled tomorrow, unless there are huge power outages. The reports that are being given now sound as if Floyd will be leaving in the next few hours, so by morning it will be clear.

Some systems have already cancelled for tomorrow, but those are mainly on the Cape where flooding is an issue. Two systems that are totally landlocked have already cancelled, what’s with that??

I don’t want to have the day cancelled, it’s too early in the year, and all it does is extend us in June. In January I’ll be doing the happy dance if we get a snow day, but this is just too early and we don’t "need" the day off yet.

Besides,we have Monday off as it’s a Jewish holiday.

I’m worried about my llamas in this storm. They seem to be outside all the time, never in a barn, just under a tent awning. Llamas can’t be used to things like hurricanes, so they must be jittery – if llamas get jittery. I would think that that this must be upsetting to them.

I think the plants are awfully confused. First they suffered through the hot dry summer, and have looked just so dried out and leggy. Now for the last two weeks they’ve been getting rained on, and often deluged upon. They are looking nice and green, but have few blossoms left. Although the begonias, portulaca and New Guinea impatiens are in good shape. I should probably go out and try to do something with them, but I think I’ll just leave it all up to Mother Nature.

I do need to listen to the reports about what the wind speed is going to be. I have to decide whether or not to take the boxes off the railings. They could become deadly missiles if the winds get violent.

I’m feeling so swamped with work. I think that we’re stupid to start special education services as soon as the kids start the year. My colleague and I have just realized that no one else has started seeing kids till this week, allowing themselves all sorts of time to get the paperwork and organizational stuff out of the way. We’ve decided we’re stupid to kill ourselves as we do, as it puts us in a crazy place as far as getting the nitty gritty stuff done, but we tend to worry about the kids and the classroom teachers.

We need to rethink this process.

I also need to finish testing the little girl who is going to be the child I work with as I learn this new reading program. The testing issues are going to be a huge problem this year due to lack of time in my schedule and lack of space to test in privacy. The building has no extra room at all and this is going to be an enormous issue for all of us.

A frustrating one as well. It reminds me of the old days when special education was done in closets and in janitor’s rooms. I thought we’d come farther along than that, but this is no way to create space where it doesn’t exist.

Tomorrow is dress down day. Only one problem, nothing I can dress down into is ironed.

Guess I need to get busy.
