Wishing Upon A Star

October 15
Four day weeks

Listening to: Linda Eder, Barbra Streisand, Elton John, Bobby Caldwell and Sarah McLachlan – on shuffle.

Reading: Harry Potter (well I’m trying to!)

Weather: 60, sunny, windy

Trivia: "Dreamt" is the only English word that ends in the letters "mt".

Cool word:fore [interj., adj. FOR]

When you're golfing, it's wise to watch out when you hear somebody yell "Fore!" It means there's a golf ball headed your way. The adjective sense of this word describes something that is located up ahead or toward the front, as in the nautical opposites, fore and aft. In every case, the word is short for before. It's originally from the ancient root per, which led to a wide variety of words about distance, direction, importance, and temporal sequence. These words include for, far, first, forth, former, from, proton, furnish, approach, probe, prove, private, and prime. The golf warning came out of British military terminology. When troops were lined up for battle, the ranks would fire in sequence. When a line behind was to shoot, the commander would yell out "'ware before!." On hearing this, it was smart to kneel down if you were in front.

I am totally convinced that there is no such thing as a four day week. We might only go in to work four days, but we make every effort to cram the usual five days of work into that reduced amount of time.

I swear I’m more exhausted after a short week than I am after a full week.

Surprisingly enough, I didn’t bring as much work home as I usually do on a weekend. I managed to more or less get the coming week pretty well planned, and my bag is relatively light for a weekend.

About the only thing I haven’t planned is my last adult ed class. They asked me to tech them how to surf the Internet, so I have to figure out what to do with them. I’ve taught a course like that before for teachers , so I know I already have some handouts around for that, it’s just a matter of finding them.

Given the condition of everything in my life, that ‘s easier said than done!

My plan for the better part of the weekend is to clean, clean, clean!

I’m making a priority list of what I most want to get done, so I can cross things off as they’re accomplished. It’s going to be a long list, and I know I won’t manage to finish everything, but I’m going to make a big sent, come hell or high water!

I’d die of embarrassment if anyone were to drop in now. I can’t find a clean spot of the floor, as I’ve just dropped stuff, and not put anything away in weeks. The piles of clothes are beginning to look like colorful mountains, and one avalanche might kill the cat.

I have to make a dent this weekend, as next Saturday is my day in New York City.

No, Michael still hasn’t mentioned it, and I’ve received at least one e-mail from him almost every day this week. Yesterday he sent three. Go figure.

I was hoping to be eremitic this weekend, but because of the script for the chorus show, I can’t be. Dee and I met tonight to try to clean it up and get it finished, but it was almost as if we were starting from scratch. What had been written when we a couple of weeks ago was absolutely awful. It lacked any polish or class. We kept some of the basic pieces but worked to expand it and make it a bit more interesting.

It’s a painful process, as wording is so difficult.

We decided to meet again tomorrow night to finish it. I really don’t want to go out at all, but this has to get done.

I’ll be so glad when all of this is over.
