Wishing Upon A Star

October 7
Frost on the Pumpkin

Listening to: "You’ve Got Mail" Soundtrack

Reading: Harry Potter

Weather: 50’s, sunny

Trivia: A duck’s quack doesn’t echo.

Cool word: humectant [n., adj. hyoo-MEK-tunt]

If something is a humectant, then it promotes retention of moisture. Such a substance is a moistening agent. Example: "Among the finest humectants for potting soil are the polymer hydrogels, which take up water and keep it available for the roots of thirsty plants." This word's Latin lineage traces back through humectare (to moisten) and humectus (moist) to humere (to be moist). From the same root we have humid (moist, usually of air), and humidity (dampness of air). There is also the humidor [n. HYOO-mih-dor], a tight-lidded container designed to preserve a moist interior environment, and the humidistat [n. hyoo-MIH-dih-stat], a sensor and controller that maintains a set level of humidity.

This has been such a long day!!

We started the day with a faculty breakfast/ wedding/baby shower. (Two different teachers were being feted.) it was very nice. We gave them presents and had a nice little breakfast buffet of juice, bagels, Danish and fruit. There was also a cake. Unfortunately.

Let’s say I was only able to abstain till lunchtime.

The day was filled with mini-crisis after mini-crisis. And the trainer from the reading program that we’re all struggling to learn was also observing us. There was a scheduling mess and I was afraid that one of my colleagues was going to have a breakdown, so I ended up trading times with her. I can deal with change, but it just made for a bit of an inconvenience.

After a full day of work we had to attend a two hour training class for the reading program. I don’t think I got a whole lot out of it, I was too tired to absorb a lot of what she was saying.

The trainer is an absolutely lovely woman who is trying so hard to be enthusiastic and encouraging, but I just can’t drum up a lot of energy for this. It’s one more thing that’s taking up a huge chunk of time.

I did another impulsive thing today. I bought a ticket to see Sarah Brightman in concert Saturday night. I have no idea why I did this. I saw the ad in the paper, picked up the phone and ordered a ticket.

I do think Sarah Brightman has a beautiful voice, and I loved her when I saw her in "Phantom of the Opera", but never thought about going to hear her in concert.

Suddenly I’m going.

But you know, if this helps to keep me sane, then all these impulsive moves are a good thing. It’s better than just sitting at home and doing nothing.

My apartment is staring to look frighteningly awful again, and it’s strictly sheer laziness on my part. I’ve got a two week old stack of mail and newspapers that need to be sorted through, enough shoes piled up in the corner to start a store, and a trail of other assorted items that run through the living room, dining area and bedroom.

The suitcase I used when I went to New York in August is still sitting in the middle of the bedroom.

For that matter, so are most of the items I took with me.

I’m afraid to measure the height of the pile of laundry. (It’s clean, at least!)

I know that if I took the time to deal with the little things as they happen that I wouldn’t be in that state.

I still haven’t heard from Michael. I would really like to know what he’s thinking about and if he want to get together.

Hell, at this point I’d be happy with a simple "hello".

It’s gotten really cold here, to the point where people have actually turned on their heat. The commonly used expression is "tonight there will be frost on the pumpkin".

I’ll admit to looking for my electric blanket and piling on a couple of extra afghans, but I refuse to turn on the heat this early. My electric bill is enormous when I heat this place, and if I start doing it now, I’ll be having to really crank it up by the time January rolls around.

I want fall. Crisp beautiful nights, and warm sunny days.
