Weather: 70 and sunny…a perfect fall day
Trivia: HOW NOSY ARE WE?
One person in three will admit looking at other people's mail...half of us admit looking at workplace documents that aren't meant for our eyes...and even more people admit that they eavesdrop. That's based on asking people outright. If we spied on them we might find that folks are even nosier.
Cool word: farrago [n. fuh-RAY-go, fuh-RAH-go]
A farrago is a mixed medley, a varied assortment. It's a slightly disparaging word that implies a haphazard, disorganized collection. Example: "Edwin's thesis was little more than a random farrago of hastily collected themes." Our modern word is a direct descendent of the Latin farrago, which was a kind of mixed cattle feed, or more generally, any kind of mixture. The root was Latin far (spelt, a kind of hardy wheat), which also gave us farina (a mealy sort of breakfast cereal) and farinaceous (starchy, mealy, powdery). When English adopted farrago the meaning broadened from a mixture of fodder to include any kind of mixture, even a mixture of ideas, as in "a farrago of nonsense," one of the most popular modern uses of the word. More distant relatives from the same root include the grain called
barley, and the place where it is stored, which is called the barn.
Hoping for Free Time

I have got to find a way to carve out some time for myself this weekend.
I didn’t realize how totally wiped out I was until I finally got in at 9:30 and my bones sort of turned to water. It was all I could do to drag myself to the sofa. I then decided I had to write today’s entry, so I propped myself up at the computer desk and finished this entry.
Then couldn’t get into Angelfire to upload it.
Grrrr.
So this is a bit later than intended.

Can you tell I like Halloween?
God forbid I should be subtle.
I really do love holidays. I’m willing to celebrate just about any of them, and will happily decorate for them as well. I’ll at least put something up on my front door and have a seasonal centerpiece on my table.
I’m sure web gurus will roundly criticize me for the designs I use here, but they make me smile and I need things that will make me smile. This design may change during the month as I’ve found tons of free Halloween graphics that I love and want to use. I hope it doesn’t chase people away, but by the same token it’s something that I enjoy having, and I’m going to try to do more to please myself when I have the chance.

I had a script committee meeting tonight, and was so tired that I should have bugged out. But I couldn’t because it’s part of my job as show chair to write it. There has been a lot of denial and confusion about who is supposed to actually do the writing. Dee and I had originally signed up to do it, then were told we couldn’t as it was the emcee committee’s job. We were irritated, but are on the emcee committee so were part of it anyways. Well, all of a sudden all the emcee wannabes have discovered how much work it takes to do this and are now saying they were never told that this was something they had to do. I’m up to my ears with this one.
We met at Chi-Chi’s for about three hours and did manage to crank out most of the first half of the show. It’s tough, though. The other committee members don’t understand that you have to write the show as if you have an audience that is totally ignorant and that each song needs to be set up in a way that makes it clear where the song came from and why we’re singing it.
One of the women seems to want to go the too corny and low class route and we have to fight against that. She tends to go for low humor that’s often not appropriate when telling jokes as well, so it’s hard to convince her that these types of jokes are not appropriate for a show. She also wanted to change some of the music and how it’s sung, but we don’t have that power. I can’t say I agree with her anyways.
I was glad to go home.

I have so much that I need to do this weekend, but I’m over-scheduled yet again.
Tomorrow I’m meeting Cathy and our friend Martha to take Martha out to lunch for her birthday. Martha is one of the few people I’m still friendly with from my days of teaching at the middle school. We co-taught English classes and had a swell time doing it. She was the first person who was willing to give our inclusion program a shot. None of the other teachers would do it, and later resented having it forced on them.
My escape form the middle school was a happy moment.
Lunch usually takes a long time, as we have all sorts of gossip to catch up on, and eating is secondary. I do look froward to hearing how all my former fifth graders are doing.
Cathy has decided (as of Thursday) that she doesn’t like it when the three of us get together. Note: She orchestrated this whole lunch thing. She’s decided that Martha doesn’t understand or isn’t interested in the life of a single woman (I disagree), and Cathy finds it boring if Martha and I talk about kids, as she doesn’t know them.
I guess she’s decided to start compartmentalizing her friends. I hate that and can’t live that way myself. I hope she’s not in a pissy mood over this.

Sunday I’m taking Matilda out for a couple of hours. Keith has little league try-outs (In October??), and it’s a long afternoon for Matilda to hang out and do nothing, so we’ll have a girls afternoon out.
I have so much work to do, that I really should just find a way to hide and shut everyone out. This reading program is killing me, and I don’t understand what I’m doing, so I need to read the manuals AGAIN.
I’m hating this.
I also have to do all the household errands that are necessary for the week. Groceries, dry cleaners etc.

I don’t know how I’m going to get everything done.
