Trivia:Why do barbers have red and white poles outside their shops?

As a holdover from the days when they also performed rough-and-ready surgery. There was a time when your neighborhood barber would extract teeth and practice the alleged panacea of bloodletting as well as cutting hair and trimming beards. During a bloodletting, it was customary for the patient to squeeze a pole tightly in one hand, so that the veins would swell and the blood gush freely. The pole was painted red to minimize bloodstains and, when not in use, hung outside as an advertisement, wrapped round with the white gauze used to bandage bloodlet arms. Adopted as the official trademark of the barber-surgeon guild a gilt knob was later added to the top of the pole, representing the brass basin that served the dual purpose of letting blood and whipping up shaving lather. Later, when the barber-surgeons guild split, the barbers ended up with the trademark pole.

Cool word: jingoism (JING-go-iz-um), noun - Staunch, extreme patriotism or chauvinism; calculatedly overblown patriotic rhetoric used for political advantage. "Fred became highly annoyed whenever political candidates substituted hollow jingoism for discussion of real issues in their campaign speeches."

Every muscle and bone in my body aches. I’m not sick, I’m just hurting. I have no idea why either. I haven’t done anything unusual, and this week has been a relatively calm one.

But I really, really hurt.

The day was spent doing odds and ends, trying to make sense of a mess I created when trying to do something fancy on this site. It didn’t work and is now totally gone, but was an exercise in frustration. That’s what happens when you try to teach yourself.

I also started trying to do some Christmas shopping on the web. Mostly I was researching stuff that my mother wanted information about. Particularly American Girl dolls, which are something my niece was looking for. These things are gorgeous, but boy are they expensive!!

I putzed around for the rest of the day. Moved piles. Dusted a bit, but nothing truly productive. I just plain old didn’t want to do anything.

Damn lazy. Achy.

I did go out to get catfood. I don’t remember if I’ve mentioned that the cat has been kind of sick, but not really sick lately. Last weekend it was throwing up and diarrhea, so I took him off the canned food, and put him on dry to see if it was the canned food that was doing it. It was.

So now I’m trying to find one variety of canned food that won’t upset his system, I guess as cats get older you have to stick with one flavor, because they can’t take change. So this is my new quest and I do think I’ve hit on the right one, at least for now. The early results are good.

I also did a quick run to the craft stores. I was supposed to have mailed my secret stamper package long before now, but like everything else in my life I forgot, and when I went to put it together it looked too sparse to me, so I needed to find a few extras to toss in. I think it looks sparse because I’ve picked small but pricey type things to send.

Now I need to get it to the post office.

If I feel less achy tomorrow maybe I can run around before it’s time to leave for our performance in the evening.

I was happy to see that guy win the million bucks the other night. I knew the answers to all those questions, too.

I guess I’ll just never be a millionaire.
