The Unofficial John Fuglesang Appreciation Page - RIP AFV on ABC
(Written on 6/28/99 before I learned of the
show's recent cancellation)
So we John Fugelsang fans have a weekly show we can
watch him on. I bet you think we're happy, right?
Well, for the most part, we are. But nothing is without
a price. And her name is Daisy.
Actually, she's not so bad. At least it's not her fault
the jokes aren't funny and the videos are an exercise
in schadenfreude (note: it's German *and* I spelled it
right!). Lately, however, I haven't even been able to
properly enjoy dislikeing the show. There has been a
3-day construction job going on in my apartment for the
last two weeks that has involved disconnecting the cable
that ran to my bedroom. To understand that last line
properly, let me point out I live in Boston, reception
free land. We still have cable in the living room, but
that's someone's bedroom right now (construction again)
and even when it's free for the rest of us, America's
Funniest Home Video's *never* has an imperative
claim on the remote, moral or otherwise. In fact, if I
even admit I watch the show, my flatmates may never let
me touch their remote again, which wouldn't be so bad if
I could actually get the cable I paid for in my room anytime soon.
So, you possibly want some facts. John Fugelsang and
Daisy Fuentes joined on the newly christened "AFV" in
early 1998. The show now also sports writers from the
most excellent but cancelled "Mystery Science Theatre
3000." It airs on Saturdays at 8:00 for half an hour.
John Fugelsang brings much intensity to the show
(and, I hear, "a genuine affinty for the material").
As in, he is intent on wringing some humor
or at least self repsect from it. He's lately
had that look on his face during the unscripted moments
that reminds me of those old milk commercials. "I may
be hosting America's Funniest Home Videos now, but I'm
drinking milk! And that means, one day, I'll be snubbing
all of you in my Oscar speech! HaHaHaHa!"
Well, I added the evil laugh, but you get the idea.
This is only exacberated by the fact that many of the
jokes appear to be at his expense. His looks, his
popularity...no, that's ok, I'm not miffed. It's just a
show. But, talent wise, I'd like to point out they
choose Mr. Fugelsang after extensive readings.
Daisy has admitted, in interviews, they never asked her
to read anything before giving her the part.
But I'm sure it was based on talent.
