MESSAGE FROM THE CAMP DIRECTOR

Greeting Friends of Squanto,

As you are reading this we are well into the swing of things this summer at Camp Squanto. Our staff is returning many veterans including Emily Baird (Pelton), Austin Glass, Steve Goveia, Bill Webb, Gary Hyman, Fr. John Bacon, and campfire crowd favorite George “Harvey” Morrisey. Our staff is 75 strong and we are expecting as many as 2,000 scouts this summer.

Camp Squanto was rightfully chosen this year by the Northeast Region BSA to host a National Camping School the second week of June. This means our camp was on display as a model camp, as camp leaders from all over the northeast will be training at Squanto for years to come. Many staff positions including camp director, program director, aquatics, ranger, etc. are required to hold this certification in order for their camp to open and become an accredited BSA camp. As a result, our camp ranger, Roland Cloutier has had a very busy spring in preparation of an early opening. Our new Agawam campsite now has a leader’s cabin thanks to the OA. Other camp improvements include: new doors on the dining hall, new walls/doors for the chapel, a new bathroom in the Cherokee cabin, and the old Copp barn has been remodeled into two new classrooms or conference rooms. We continue to outfit all of our campsites with a larger wide-wall tent with an internal steel frames. No more bumping your head in the middle of the night on a wooden ridge pole.

The camp staff is very thankful for the Alumni Association’s ongoing financial contributions to our new C.O.P.E. course.

Our program theme this year is a Western Night that will feature a Texas BBQ. Our other events revolve around the Apache relay, OA call-out ceremony, and the Sunday and Friday campfires. Please stop in for a visit this summer…. It could be a great escape for you to share you stories, look for your plaque in the dining hall, and visit the Casoni Scouting Museum. Don‘t forget to check out our camp website at campsquanto.net.

Elliot J. Glass
Camp Director

It is with great sadness that we announce that 4 of our special Camp Squanto Alumnus passed away in 2004.
Bob and Marge Downey of Braintree (President, and Board Members of the OCC)
Steve Cote of Kingston (Waterfront Director – 1976)
Al “Woody Woodman” of Holbrook
AAAAA“Woody” was Camp Squanto Commissioner for 18 years. He will be remembered by so many
AAAAA scouts and scouters for being the keeper of the flag. His patriotic flag burning ceremonies at the
AAAAA Friday night campfires were inspiring. We will dedicate a plaque to Woody at the Memorial
AAAAA Flagpole at 1:30 pm on August 7, 2004. Send your memories of Woody to our Web-site!

MEMBERSHIP

The CSAA would like to thank all the past and present scouts and scouters who renewed their memberships, or who became new members during 2004.

We look forward to our current members renewing their membership for 2005 and invite other Squanto Alumni to become new members also. Our graphic artist friend and scouter, Bill Hubschwerlin, now living in Colorado, has GHOSTED (white) and COLOR dated the 2005 patches according to levels of membership. Note: extra membership patches left over from 2004 will be destroyed as will those in the future years.

A one time SPECIAL EDITION neckerchief with a ghosted and color date patch attached, will be given to all who become GOLD members for 2005.

An Alumni EIGHT COLORED hat pin will be available and go on sale at summer camp. These beautiful pins will sell for $3.00 each. (Designed by Bill Hubschwerlin).

Membership cards and new patches for 2005 will be available at our annual meeting on August 7, 2004 at Camp Squanto. For membership forms please check our website.
