MEMORIES

Thanksgiving was always spent at my grandmother's house. We called her Grammie (my mother was the one who insisted we call her Cinda Grammie to differentiate her from Auntie Grammie. Personally I always thought Auntie Grammie should have been called Grandmother - kind of a stiff and formal title. Anyway...back to Thanksgivings past. Everyone was to bring something, if it had to be cooked last minute that was ok. Grandma hosted and provided the most delicious brown bread I'd ever tasted. I wish I knew what bakery she got it from. I'm not sure what else she did, I don't recall what anyone else did, with the exception of my Aunt Jean. She always brought homemade sauerkraut. Yum! Everyone always ate too much, swore they wouldn't eat as much the next year, and sat around semi-comatose the rest of the afternoon. My cousin Steve, with whom I had a fairly close relationship over the years, says there were tensions underlying the holiday. Either I was oblivious or he was oversensitive or perhaps a combination of both. I really do not recall anything. I guess Thanksgiving to me always meant family gatherings and tons of food. After Grammie died, so did all hope of future Thanksgiving gatherings.
