Summary

Left Midfielder Maradona (he sometimes played inside forward) in his practice drills shows new different ways of getting the ball up off the ground--flipping it up and forward with one foot without first rolling it back, flipping it straight up with both feet without first rolling it back, rolling it up the left heel with the right foot and heeling it up with the left foot with the ball all the while in front of the body.

Midfielder Maradona unlike inside right forward Pele did not crouch downwards and forwards over the ball when dribbling at a defender. He was less ambidextrous than Pele. He usually approached the defender at a higher speed than was typical with forward Pele, with the ball on his left foot, and then cut either left or right, not bothering with putting the ball through the defender's legs or putting the ball to one side of the defender and his body to the other, depending upon his momentum unpredictability and quickness to carry him past the defender, as opposed to the use of feints and stepovers.

Maradona could do alot of juggling tricks in practice but such did not seem to evolve into being used in actual games. Maradona was short, at five feet five inches, compared to the average height Pele at five feet ten inches. They say Maradona was 172 lbs but I think this is an exaggeration as the statements that he is five feet eight inches tall were exaggerations.

Maradona seems to be proof of the idea that you can go far in life by doing simple things well, such as simply approaching the defender with the ball on your best foot and then cutting left or right, without bothering with feints and stepovers.

The drills that I plan on instituting for myself in honor of Maradona: dribble towards target touching ball every four paces only with left foot, then cut left or right; dribble towards target touching ball every six paces only with left foot, then cut left or right;

A few hours ago my decision was to  again as a result of Maradona's influence, add a drill where I dribble the ball towards a target touching the ball every three paces touching ball with alternating left and right feet then cut left or right. I have since realized that this drill is already part of my repertoire so the thing that will be added will be dribbling towards a target touching the ball every FIVE paces, touching the ball with alternating left and right feet.

The every five steps alternator is my  (I am left footed) idea of adding a dash (but not too much)  of Pele-like ambidexterity to the unambidextrous Maradona technique. What  I learned watching Maradona was the possibilities of long fast dribblers past defenders with the ball being touched from every four paces on up to every ten or more paces. Before watching Maradona I had thought of offensive dribbling as being more tightly controlled than say the ball being touched every eight paces, so loosely controlled runs were not as much a part of my practice repertoire as they will become now that I have watched the Maradona clips.

The drills that I now plan on instituting for myself in honor of Maradona: dribble towards target touching ball every four paces only with left foot, then cut left or right; dribble towards target touching ball every six paces only with left foot, then cut left or right; dribble ball towards target touching ball every three paces touching ball with alternating left and right feet then cut left or right. The every three steps alternator is my  (I am left footed) adding a dash (but not too much)  of Pele-like ambidexterity to the unambidextrous Maradona technique.

This vid shows Maradon and Ronaldinho. It is difficult to see who is doing what.

Seems Maradona and Ronaldinho, unlike Pele, sweep the ball to the left or the right past a defender, whereas Pele would do such things and also throw in putting the ball through the defender's legs, and putting the ball to one side of the defender and his body to the other.

Maradona juggling and stretching in a warmup.

He does things like catch the ball with his foot and hold it with his foot, balance the ball on his head, the ball resting on his head.

He shows a couple of very interesting trick moves.

At 0:15 He places his left heel in front of the ball and the side of his right foot behind the ball, and thereby flicks the ball up waist high in FRONT of himself.

We living out in the hicks have learned of doing this with the ball behind the back, getting  the ball up over our heads and in front of us, but somehow it has escaped us how such can be done with the ball in front of us.

Maradona shows alot of stationary juggling with alternating left and right feet; a short trot of five yds slowly, touching the ball every right pace with his thigh; and stationary air dribbling the ball going no more than about a foot above his head.

He and his team-mates dance around and stand still, imitating movements of the body during a game.

They do a stretch in which they squat down and then bend over to put their hands on the ground in front of them.

At 1:44 he flicks the stationary grounded ball straight upwards in front of him, up thigh high straight in front of him with one or both feet, then steps backwards with a foot and commences air juggling.

Maradona not a major part of this vid.

Well illustrates how the offensive dribbling soccer move has evolved since the time of Pele.

Video starts off showing innumerable instances of players other than Maradona utilizing a move wherein the ball is pushed or rolled outwards and then pushed in the opposite direction inwards with the foot basically in contact with the ball the entire time.

Next segment players other than Maradona are shown executing a slick new move featuring the right foot sneaking the ball behind the left foot as if the intention was that the player was sneaking the ball to his left, but the ball actually is kicked by the player, using his right foot to the left of his left foot, to the player's right.

The players other than Maradona are shown executing moves wherein the ball is rolled by the left foot a couple of feet to the right, and then with the right foot immediately to the player's left.

These players seem to have dispensed with the putting the ball through the defender's legs and putting the ball to one side of the defender and their body to the other.

The end shows several examples of the slick new move wherein the ball is passed with the right foot, while the left foot is placed to the right of the ball, instead of being placed to the left of the ball where it is usually placed.

At one point Maradona is shown with his back to the defender, he moves his left foot over the ball and to the right of the ball, then moves his right foot behind his left foot to flick the ball to his left.

This clip really is about Maradona dribbling the ball, as opposed to other players or Maradona warming up.

Starts out at 0:52 showing Maradona executing what some call his classic signature move (the 'original 360'), featuring him rolling the ball to his left side with the sole of his left foot, while swiveling his body clockwise and then rolling the ball forward with the sole of his right foot.

Maradona shows a bicycle kick, he seemed to be of the school that believes in being able to do innumerable things well, being well rounded.

1:07 standing still he steps over the ball to his right, then to his left, then cuts right

He passes from the right side  with his left foot, but with his right planted foot to the LEFT of the ball

Maradona seems to have favored his left foot while dribbling, word is he was a very left footed player. He was similar to Pele but dispensed with putting the ball through the defender's legs, or putting the ball to one side of the defender and the body to the other; basically he would approach the defender with the ball on his left foot and then simply cut to his left or to his right. He did not make a thing out of crouching and getting the knee out over the ball like Pele, he was 5'5" Pele was 5'10", he was a midfielder Pele was a forward.

Only a small part of this clip has to do with Maradona.

We see Brazil's Ronaldo faking someone out by lunging inwards at the ball with alternating left and right feet as it rolls forward.

The beginning of the clip is Maradona, showing stuff shown in other clips exclusively devoted to Maradona listed above. The rest of the clip is players other than Maradona.

Seems Maradona often depended on his forward momentum generated by moving at high speed, to beat the defender without feints, using his left foot to push it to one side or the other.

Seems to show, that Maradona, was a  right foot only when necessary player--though in one instance he is shown turning clockwise starting with his back facing the other goal rolling the ball with his right foot to get open and score.

A player is shown while shielding the ball, rolling it backwards with the sole of his feet through a defender's legs. Amazing what you can do if you keep alert to the possibilities and keep your eye on the players in the game.

Player shown stepping to his left over ball with his left then cutting right with his right then shooting scoring.

Usual clips of Brazilians alternating left and right stepover or lunge fakes as ball rolls forward, then being stripped of the ball and falling, this is supposed to be special maybe allegedly the Brazilians involved ended up being fouled.

Diego Armando Maradona - greatest playmaker of all time...

Yet another Maradona juggles while warming up video, this time including yet more tricks not seen in vid clips listed above. This time he sports a cool-looking beard and mustache.

Tricks not shown in clips listed above:

At 0:21 Maradona approaches in practice a stationary ball on the ground, puts his right foot to the left side of the ball (unusual position), flicks the ball forward with his left foot, then before it hits the ground brings his left foot back to normal position and hits it again.

This shows how one can simply flick the ball up and forward without rolling it back first to start an air dribble, with some balls on some surfaces that is. This happened on high quality grass field.

In practice he does the "Scotch" move, heeling it back with his front foot immediately kicking it forward with the other.

He balances the ball on his foot, loops his foot over and under the ball and then catches it again.

He throws the ball upwards using both feet behind his back, throwing the ball with his feet not kicking it, then turns around to commence juggling before the ball hits the ground.

He juggles the ball hitting it exclusively with the heel of his left foot.

He lies on the ground, face up, and juggles the ball with his feet, then does  a bicycle kick.

He dribbles the ball with the soles of his feet the way a basketball player dribbles a ball with his hands.

He slowly jogs approx ten yds hitting the ball exclusively with his shoulders.

He juggles using one shoulder alone.

He balances the ball on his head (shown in other vids above already?).

He kicks the ball high, then before it hits the ground kicks it high again, this continues for a few kicks.

Maradona Tricks not shown in videos above but shown here:

He juggles the ball with his feet while lying on the ground and then gets up and stands all the  while still juggling the ball with  his feet.

He chases a ball down to his left and chips it over the goalie from 25 yds.

In practice he slowly dribbles forward 7 yds  keeping the ball off the ground touching it with only his left foot every left pace for seven paces, then flicks to his right and shoots from 20 yds. As he kept the length of his paces short, despite all the times he kicked the ball he only went 7 yds slowly.

He heels the ball forward and to his right with his left foot when he and the ball are both moving forward.

He traps a ball in the air that is moving the same direction as him with his outstretched foot left foot knocking it forward, then hits it before it hits the ground, then knocks it into the goal as it is rolling.

He charges a goalie while dribbling the ball, comes to a stop as the goalie slides, then flips it over the goalie who he has made a complete fool of.

This and the above videos evince a complete dichotomy between Maradona's juggling tricks and what he did in a game. Seems his juggling tricks never were used in actual games...in the games he basically attacked defenders moving forward at high speed with his left foot on the grounded ball and then cut left or right-This has to do with him being an attacking midfielder and Pele being a forward--the attacking midfielder can get up a head of steam on his way at the defender more than an inside forward like Pele can.

Come to think of it maybe Pele was a crouched forward type whereas Maradona was an upright type because the posture is more upright when approaching the defender at a high speed the way attacking midfielders do.
