Stereo Soul Future doesn’t want to say that
they’re the best band in the world, but they certainly think they are. For the last two and a half years, they have been easily the most consistent rock band in America, releasing two critically acclaimed albums and a seven song EP while relentlessly touring the North East. Their latest effort, “Behind Your Eyes”, a compilation of both their finest songs from the past and two newly recorded songs, has recently been made available to the public.
This collection includes their newest single “Leaches” which brims with such genius that it must be heard to believed, and “Hard To Breathe”, which recently reached #34 on the Rolling Stone Online Rock and Pop charts. This album is the culmination of
their brilliance. Guitarist Leo White, however, has a different take: “Sure, the albums are great, but personally, I think we’re stronger live."
Formed in August 1997, Stereo Soul Future started
writing songs and playing local venues to sold out crowds almost immediately. In June 1998, the group began recording their first full length studio effort, the eclectic Go! Go! The Moxie!. “I liked it because it was different. No one will ever make a record that good under those circumstances. I
stand by it,” reflects bassist Brian “Hoss” Coughlin.
After January 1999’s stopgap Polysinus EP (Coughlin on Polysinus: “We had a four track and two days: you do the math.”), the band looked to expand its studio capabilities and enlisted the help of producer Ian Hughes, who had worked in a smaller capacity on the band’s prior releases. According to guitarist Chris Field, the band set out to make “the perfect pop record”. So...did they succeed? “I don’t know about that,” says producer Hughes of August
1999’s Perfect Afternoon, “but they came damn close”.
We agree.
So what does the future hold? “We just gotta get
our arses out there,” says Leo White. “Get heard. Let the music speak for itself”. “I’m not gonna lie to you,” says Brian Coughlin, “There’s a lot of hype. We just gotta stop ****ing around and hopefully people
will see through all the bullsh*t”. “I like our
chances,” says Chris Field. “I’m not worried.” Drummer TJ Miller is more confident: “If there’s a better band out there, I wanna hear it. I predict a million sold in six months.” In a perfect world.
