Leigon looked around, suddenly as if shooting at no one he let fly an
arrow from his longbow. A small scream issued from the tree and a
squirrel resistance fighter fell out. Leigon smiled grimly.
"More out there I reckon." Leigon said to a rat beside him.
"I hope so." The rat said licking his blade.
"You hope so? We lost a score of soldiers in the first skirmish alone."
"I know, I wonder if I can have Atheracks cloak." The rat said with a
grin. Suddenly a barrage of arrows flew from every where and the rat and
I ducked with the rest of the strike force.
"There's no end to 'em," Leigon said. It was true. Endless amounts of
arrows flew from every where and many a good soldier fell in heaps.
Blood turned the ground crimson. Leigon fired again and again at the
sources but the squirrels moved to fast, it was a waste of arrows.
Leigon continued to fire even though he knew it was almost impossible to
hit so many moving targets. River pebbles began to mix with arrows.
"They've got reinforcements, retreat!"
The rat looked at Leigon quizzically, "but King Hisk said the..."
"Fool! I know what Hisk said but if we don't retreat we're dead!" We
vanished like smoke into the woodlands. "We need a way to trap all the
squirrels and otters together and kill them all with out loosing so many
soldiers, any suggestions?"
The rat stuck his paw in the air, "I have one, what if we caught some
little woodlanders and tied them up in the middle of the forest, but
make sure their conscious so they can weep and cry, then when the
squirrels and otters come to their rescue, poof! We set the forest on
fire, then we mount an assault, the squirrels and otters wont be able to
fight under those conditions and we can keep our distance, they'll be so
preoccupied with getting out of the inferno they wont bother about us."
"Good plain, but wont we perish in the flames too?"
"No, ahead of time we'll get as much water as possible or better yet,
slice down the trees that surround where we are going to put the little
ones. Then we'll get lots of water and douse the flames, that should
work." Everyone agreed, soon we had everything we needed. We saw a
couple of hedgehogs playing around and we snatched them. We tied them to
a post in the clearing with all the surrounding trees cut down. Soon the
little ones were weeping for someone to help them. Squirrels and otters
showed up almost instantly and before they could react, four flaming
arrows flew out and hit the trees. Flames began to lick the wood
hungrily and the squirrels and otters for the first time showed fear. We
quickly fired a barrage of arrows cutting the force down in an instant.
We doused the flames as fast as we could and saved the hedgehogs, two
new slaves.
