Chapter 9

GUESTQUARTERS.

"I've never heard of this place before Candy." I said looking up at the impressive marble sign etched in gold.

"Judging by the landscape I would say that this place is at least a four," said Candy.

I looked at her blankly as I opened the door to the hotel.

"Four stars that is," she clarified.

"oh. Right...Yes hello," I greeted the clark at the desk. "Do you have a reservation for Palmer and..."

"Jenkins," Candy filled in.

"Miss Palmer? Ma'am these were delivered for you this morning. The man behind the desk produced a glass vase with a half dozen yellow roses.

I laughed, "there must be some mistake. You see, I'm not even from this area."

"Miss, if I may say so, you're the only palmer scheduled to check in today. They are indeed yours."

"Oh, well then I guess..." I was thoroughly confused.

The bellhop lead us to the elevator. I couldn't help but marvel at the six story aviary that was centered in the lobby. Severel species of exotic parrots were displayed.

Candy had taken the liberty of opening up the envelope. "I hope you enjoy your stay. I look forward to working with you."

"Nick," she said just as I said "Brian."

"Well, we're both probably right. It was probably Brian's idea." said Candy.

"Why didn't they just sign the frigging thing?" I marveled.

Just as the doors to the elevater were closing, a hand pushed through and then a tall male figure followed.

I noticed Candy gaping quite openly at the man, so I nudged her.

"Um, excuse me...but are you Lance Bass?" she asked.

I took a closer look, of course! He used to be in that group I used to like...

"From 'NSYNC?" her voice was getting dangerously high pitched.

He laughed modestly "yeah, guilty as charged. He reached out to shake her hand. "Nice to meet you..."

"Candace. Oh wow..." she looked over at me awestruck. "You know that I cried when you guys broke up," she continued.

"Well, my first country record is going to be released in a couple weeks...check it out."

He stepped onto his floor "it was nice meeting you girls! Bye now."

I looked at Candy "for God's sake breath!" I guess I wasn't in a very understanding mood.

"I'm trying, Selena."

I never understood the teen idol thing. Sure I had my share of New Kids on The Block pinups on my walls when I was younger, but I never thought that I would act out of character when meeting the Backstreet Boys. And I really didn't. It really bothered me that these groups had young girls wrapped around their fingers.

"Thanks for letting me crash here Frick," said Nick as he settled down on the couch next to his best friend.

Brian munched on a potatoe chip, "are you still planning on going out tonight?"

"If you're game," Nick said hopefully.

"Naw, I wanna call it a night. Watch Full House or somethin'"

"Maybe I'll call Selena," Nick thought aloud.

"I think you oughta leave the poor girl alone."

Nick snorted, "whatever man!"

Brian looked at him squarely "man I'm being serious here! You don't think I don't know what you're up to? Gee, Selena seems to be the spitting image of Carla."

"I don't know what you're talking about," Nick avoided Brian's eyes.

Carla was an ex-girlfriend of Nick's. She was also the daughter of their current producer. They hadn't gone out long, but she had left him in the dust for some other band member. "Whatever man, let's just chill for now," Brian turned on the TV set.

Nick didn't even pay attention to the sitcom on the screen. Brian was right. She DID look like Carla. But girls only seemed to like Nick for his looks anyway, so why couldn't he be the same?

Brian didn't know what upset him more. The fact that Selena could get hurt from Nick's shallow crush, or tha fact that Selena might actually like him back. The truth was, he was beginning to realize how compatible their personalities were. Was he falling for her?
