As with Sailor Moon, there are a large number of names for Sailor Mercury's alterego. In Japanese, she is Ami Mizuno. In English, Amy Anderson. And in French, she is Amy Mizuno.
Amy of the Anime is quite a differnt creature form the Ami/Amy of Manga. Of all the characters, Amy is the one whom I feel is the most shortchanged. Her personality in the Anime is almost subserviant, with her almost never taking the initiative in anything. In the Manga however, Ami has a much larger role. She is more than the stereotyped "brainy sidekick". She and Makoto are shown as being quite good friends, and are often seen hanging out together - not studying incessantly. This is not to say that Amy is not still the model of academic perfection. She is, but with one major difference - Manga Amy knows how to kick back and have fun.
Amy's parents are divorced. She lives with her mother, who is a VERY wealthy doctor. At one point in the Manga, the girls are testing the strength of the Silver Crystal and break one of Mrs. Mizuno's diamond rings. "Oh, that's ok," Amy says, "My Mom has lots of them." Don't you wish you had diamonds to spare?
Amy's dad is an artist, whom she sees but rarely. He puts in a brief appearance in manga volume 4, only to vanish again.
Overall, Manga Amy is a wonderful girl with many interests and interesting facets to her personality. Anime Amy is a stereotype, and should not be viewed as the definitive Amy. She does not do the true Amy justice.
