Friday 13th : The Obsession interview

I recently spoke with the Producer / Director of a picture named Friday 13th : The Obsession. I asked him several questions about his master piece, all of which are here:

1) Have you worked on any previous pictures?

I have worked on several short subjects in school. My favorite being a 10min. little comedy called "The Last Cheesburger" about one man's quest for the last piece of meat on earth after it is taken over by the vegitarian armada. I have also done several live events such as weddings and I also did TGI Friday's Bartender Championships. But this is my first full lengh attempt at storytelling.

2) How long did (will) it take to finish your film?

Well from actual idea to screen it will have been about 3 years, but from final draft, casting, and shooting to screen it will have been a little less than a year. We started last Sept. and plan to be done by mid-July. ( we took a two month break during the winter )

3) How many characters are killed?

About 13 ( that wasn't on purpose ). Actualy by the time of final cut it my have changed. The thing with these movies is that once you have the basic story structure, you can pretty much add, subtract, and move the murders around. However, in my movie, most of the action is in the third and fourth acts.

4) Any special effects we should know about?

Other than the standard gore we do have a couple of computer opticals planned, but I will have to see how much money is left after we are done shooting.

5) Is anybody made up to look like Jason?

The actual "Jason" does appear in the film in dream sequences. In fact the movie opens with a great classic "friday" camp slaughter scene.

6) If so, which part is he modelled on?

Since the main character of the film is a "Friday" fan and he is the one that sees "Jason" in his dreams, I decided to use several different "Jason's". He is a cross between 6,7,and 9 mostly. He has the head from Pt.9, the green shirt from 3,4,and 6, the gloves and belt from 6, and the chain from 7. And of course he has the massive "beefy" look from 9. The character of Sean who flips out and comits the murders will be dressed in a black trenchcoat, black pants, black gloves, and the Mask from part 3-D. We wanted him to have a modern streamlined look, but still look like Jason, and it worked out well. Originaly Sean wore a crome Hockey Mask, but it just didn't look right, so we swiched to the traditional mask.

7) Any plans to publish the film?

It will be made avialable through Fridaythe13th.com and The Unofficial Freddy vs. Jason Hompage. I can't really sell it because of the copyrights

8) Did you recieve advice from anyone? Who?

Well most people I know don't even watch these movies, so I'm pretty much on my own. My crew, however, always as ideas on the murder sequences. Sean S. Cunningham and Adam Marcus know about my movie but haven't offered me any advice.

9) Are you happy with the picture?

So far. I know when it is done I will have little anal comments like " I should have done that". But I'm sure I will pleased overall with the finised product.

10) Will there be a sequel?

There is a sequel planned, but I have a few non-friday projects up next. And to be truthful it has been a lot harder than I planned, rewarding, but hard. I think I'll do a few comedies next. In fact we plan to start shooting a little comedy called "Massholes" during spring break, so we will actually have two pictures shooting at once for about a month.
