Synopsis

Faye made good on the threats and told the coven about Cassie and Adam's affair, in her own words of course, making the deed seem only treacherous and deceitful, making no mention of the sacred vow to honor Diana the two had taken. The coven came to understanding as Adam broke in and told his and Cassie's side, explaining the silver cord between them and the vow they took. The truth of Faye's blackmail and Cassie's deeds was out in the open.
A dignified Diana forgave the two and granted them permission to prove their love to her by remaining true to her now. Diana then demanded that the coven never speak of the incident again.
Cassie revealed in the Coven's next meeting that Black John, in the flesh, was responsible for her Grandmother's death; he was an actual, physical form. She told the others Grandma Howard's words, explaining how Black John had come back in 1976, and destroyed their parents coven. The coven members with dead parents realized the bravery their parents had that became the cause of their death. The also realized that they would have to do what the previous generation couldn't to beat Black John, stick together.
Cassie noticed a new face in the New Salem High School crowd, witch-hunting Portia Bainbridge, who had joined forces with Sally Waltman.
Melanie's Great Aunt Constance was taking care of Cassie's mother. Cassie's hematite was missing, so she told Diana all about it. Di revealed that hemetite may have made her lose her will at times, particularly with Adam, inducing weakness.
At Cassie's grandmother's funeral, the coven meets this generations incarnation of Black John for the first time, in the form of new principle Jack Brunswick. As Cassie's recovering from the shock of meeting him, her and Nick get together. Cassie revealed that her dreams taught her that Black John had drown in his first death. The coven explained the recent events to the crones, and received mixed reactions, originally angry, the crones gave the coven well-wishes and advice, including to stick together & uncover the remaining master tools.
At school, Faye was Black John's assistant, and helped in his assembly to present new school rules indirectly designed to punish the Club. Other students, weary from years of torment from the club, ate it up and volunteered hungrily at the chance to be hall monitors. As 'airhead' Suzan's brilliant suggestion, the coven hypothesizes that Black John was responsible for the Salem Witch Hunts in some way, in order to force that coven to fallow him, to give him power, like he was attempting to do to this coven. The girls celebrated the Night of Hecate with a crossroads ceremony, they each symbolically choose a color and a virtue: Faye, red, passion; Suzan, orange, beauty; Deborah, yellow, courage; Melanie, green, wisdom; Cassie, blue, inspiration (she impressed the girls by lighting with out benefit of a match, like Faye); Laurel, purple, compassion; Diana, white, purity.
The girls also take part in a "trust ceremony," in which Diana gives Cassie a box with a hidden present to go and hide. Cassie encounters Black John on her way, but is rescued by Nick and Adam, as Adam had felt she was in trouble. She kissed Nick, happy to have protection and safety.
Power-drunk hall monitors escort Cassie to Mr. Brunswick's office and he demonstrates his power to her by shattering her protective amethyst. The guys, Laurel, and Deborah started a huge rumble to create a diversion to allow for Cassie's release. Cassie reveals to the coven what Black John had told her, that his name in 1976 was John Black, he was Cassie's father.
Cassie had a dream that revealed where the other master tools were, hidden in her old fireplace. Her, Adam and Diana unearthed them & kept it secret, telling only Sean.
Cassie was kidnapped by the Bainbridge brothers, the threatened to kill her if she didn't tell them where the master tools where: somehow, Black John had found out, and had his goons try to recover them. Cassie defended her coven against their accusations and mentally called out for Adam's help. He heard.
The Coven, Faye notably absent, came to her rescue. Sally seemed to be vacillating in her trust of Brunswick or the Club. Nick and Cassie broke up on the way back home, as Cassie was hopelessly in love with Adam. They remained friends.
Cassie realized that Sean had told Black John about the master tools, he stole her hematite and was being influenced by his own hematite belt, he was used to commit the murders. The coven fed him lies to tell Black John, about their quarreling and problems, while they were really preparing.
They tried desperately, one last time, to get Faye back. The 9th, when the coven expected Black John to make his move, came along; Sally passed information to Cassie that Black John and Faye had blocked the bridge to the main land, while a hurricane blew nearby. Sally warned the outsiders while Cassie went to take care of her own.
Sean was purified and told the truth, he decided to fight for his coven. Cassie warned the parents and crones and told the crone's the coven's plans. The gave last minute advice, wished Cassie luck, and promised to do all they could for her mother.
The coven unanimously, minus Faye, MIA, elected Cassie as new leader, the master tools fit her well.
The coven waited for Black John to make his move, and studied Books of Shadows in the meantime. One particular spell caught their eyes, although it's full meaning was lost on them.
Cassie went in to fight Black John alone, and bought herself time to attempt an ill-fated attack with the legendary master-tool knife.
Black John demanded her allegiance, and she denied, drawing on her ancestor's, and invoking "the power which [was hers] alone." Each coven member followed, entering dramatically and symbolically into the fight, each claimed powers of nature over Black John, weakening him greatly. The coven channeled all their energy to their leader Cassie, and she used the powers of Earth and Water combined to shatter the skull that stored Black John's spirit. His safe haven was destroyed.
The battered, yet triumphant coven went home, to find Cassie's mother back to normal. They decided on a new leadership plan, a triumvirate, split between Cassie, Faye and Diana.
Diana decided it was time to complete the trust ceremony, and sent Cassie to retrieve the box she had buried. The box contained the chalcedony rose. Melanie and Diana explained that the silver cord Cassie and Adam felt was an old legendary indication of the soulmate bond. Diana had let them prove themselves to let them see how strong they really were. As Cassie came to the realization the her and Adam were unbreakably linked, she also realized tat her dreams showed her past incarnations of the coven, she realized that Faye and Diana were really a soul split. The silver cord now linked the whole coven together.
