Tibet was once the world's most remote, self-contained and religious civilization. Then, in 1949, Chinese troops invaded Tibet and quikly defeated its small, poorly-trained army. Today, China is threatening Tibet's cultural identity by causing a large influx of Chinese into Tibet. Although the exact number is unknown, Chinese outnumber Tibetans by two and sometimes three to one in Tibet's cities, particularly in Esatern Tibet. In Lhasa alone, where the number of Tibetans is estimated at 60,000, there are now approximately 150,000 Chinese civilians and security forces. The cultural identity of Tibet now hangs in the balance. If the demographic assault on Tibet is not reversed immediately and control over their daily affairs returned to the Tibetan people in the near future, the distinct Tibetan national and cultural identity will be lost.
