Got A Minute For Parents
Let's face it. Being a parent is not easy. Sometimes the pressure is just too much. Raising a child is an enormous responsibility, and parents are not magically and automatically provided with the knowledge, skills, and support they need. Here are some frequently offered tips for parents.
- Pick your battles. - Don't fight over every little thing. Decide which are the major issues on which you'll stand firm. Be willing to give a little on some of the others. It's OK to let kids win one once in a while.
- Don't talk it to death. Kids stop listening anyway. Make your point and move on.
- Don't react to your own emotions. If you find you're too upset or angry, disengage and deal with it after you calm down. Say something like, "I'm too angry to deal with this right now. We'll take a time out and talk about it later." Then make sure you do.
- Set a good example. Kids learn more from observing your behavior than they do from what you say. Try to be the kind of person you want your child to become.
