PAPA LARSEN

Sankaty Lighthouse is on the bluff near Siasconset ('sconset to those who know the island). This lighthouse has warned ships of Nantucket’s dangerous shoals for nearly 150 years and is now in imminent danger itself from severe beach erosion. My great-grandfather was Eugene Larsen the last keeper of Sankaty Light. He and his wife Edwardina raised their seven children in the shadow of this famous lighthouse on this island before Nantucket became the mecca of the rich that it is now. It was an idyllic place to raise their children which reminded them of the simplicity and remoteness of their Norwegian homeland.
