Alt.Music.Pearl Jam FAQ

Hello, and welcome to the alt.music.Pearl-Jam FAQ. If you're wondering what this site is, this site is up as a reference to new subscibers of the usenet newsgroup, alt.music.pearl-jam. This newsgroup is used to discuss the band in various ways, as well as issues pertinent to the members in the group. With Pearl Jam being a very political band, there have been debates on everything from the school shootings in Columbine to abortion, with VERY strong arguments. This is also up so that the regulars can avoid having to see the same question pop up over and over again. I hope you find this site useful, and I try to update it as much as possible. Enjoy!!!

1.What are the lyrics to Yellow Ledbetter?

There are no official lyrics to YL, Eddie made them up, they are known to change frequently.

2.What show is L2L taken from?

L2L is taken from various shows from the 1998 North American Tour-for example, F***in Up is from Boston, while Elderly Woman is from West Palm Beach

3.Where did Save it For Later come from?

Save it For Later was originally done in the 1980's by the English Beat, and was later covered EXTENSIVELY by Pete Townshend. It was first done by Pearl Jam as the infamous tag to Better Man on 9/26/96 in Augusta Maine on the No Code Tour.

4.Why was Dave A fired?

No one TRULY knows. Only the band does. It is suspected that Dave and Eddie didn't get along, and that Eddie was behind it, but THIS HAS NEVER BEEN PROVEN. For now, only the band members truly know why Dave was fired. For more info on DaveA and ALL of PJ's drummers, check out the drummer history section of Lukin.com

5.I keep hearing this song on the radio by PJ and it goes "Oh where oh where can my baby be?" What song is this and what album can I find it on?

The song is called "Last Kiss" and is an old 50's/60's song by Frank J Wilson and the Cavaliers. The band performed it throughout the 1998 North American tour, and it is NOT on any album-it was part of the 1998 Xmas single given to Ten Club Members-also, in June of 98, this single was released commercially as a single, and as a part of a compilation album called No Boundaries, with all proceeds going to CARE, an organization helping the refugees of Kosovo. The single is now out of print-if you were not a member of the Ten Club, and did not buy the single before it went out of print, you can find it on the various bootlegs of shows from 1998 where they did perform it, or on the above mentioned "No Boundaries".

6.Are there any SOUNDBOARD recordings from the 1998 tour?

The only two things that could truly be called a soundboard is the 3/5/98 Melbourne show that was broadcast on the radio. There is now also a 7/22 soundboard going around the trading community. The 9/16 show IS NOT a soundboard. It was recorded, to the BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE, from the monitors that go to the lawn at Great Woods. I also heard someone is trying to claim that the 6/21 show is a soundboard, I have this show, and it is a VERY good audience recording, but it is FAR from soundboard. There is also the 7/2/98 show, but this is NOT soundboard either, it is just an absolute AMAZING DAT recording.

7.When is PJ coming to (insert place here)?

Pearl Jam has announced tour plans for both Europe and the US for the coming months. You can check out http://www.tenclub.net/tour for tour dates and information.

8.What is a B+P?

A B+P is a blanks and postage deal-this means you send the person taping the shows for you enough blanks to cover the show as well as stamps or $ to cover his postage costs.

9.What is a 2-1?

A 2-1 is usually done when one person has nothing to trade. Say you request the 9/11 MSG show from me and I am doing a 2-1 for you. It takes 2 tapes to cover the show, so you would send me 4 tapes. I send 2 with the show back to you, and I keep the other two, sort of as a payment.

10.How can I get started with tape trading?

There are many ways-you can post on the various ngs, asking for someone to do a B+P or a 2-1 for you. You can also go to Pass It Around at http://www.geocities.com/~pjtrades for a list of traders based on the media they deal in (Analog, CDR, DAT etc) and how many they have (0-30, 31-60 etc)you can view their lists and get in contact with them about a trade, 2-1, B+P etc there is also the Pearl Jam traders page which is located at http://members.aol.com/pjtraderpg/index.htm which is somewhat the same as Pass It Around. I also suggest you check out the EXCELLENT Five Horizons guide to newbie tape trading! Since 5H requests that no links to specific pages be made, here's a link to 5H's main page. From there you can find the Newbie guide in the Shoes for My Friends Link.

11.Is the "Do the Evolution" video on Single Video Theory?

No it is not.

12.How did the 7/22 Soundboard leak out?

Supposedly, Stoney gave it to a friend who then began to distribute it. This is what I heard at least.

13.Where is Lost Souls now located?

Lost Souls can now be located at http://www.freespeech.org/lost_souls/index.html

14.Is Chris Cornell opening up for the band in Europe?

NO!

15.Does the Ten Club give out my name to other organizations, such as Planned Parenthood?

No, the Ten Club does not give out your name or address to any organization.

16.What's the guitar tab to Last Kiss?

G Em C D

17.What are the lyrics to Last Kiss?

CHORUS

Oh Where oh where can my baby be?

The Lord took her away from me

She's gone to heaven so I got to be good

So I can see my baby when I leave this world

Verse

We were out on a date in my daddy's car

We hadn't driven very far

There in the road, straight ahead

A car was stalled, the engine was dead

I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right

I'll never forget the sound that night

The screaming tires, the bustin glass

The painful scream that I heard last

CHORUS

Verse

When I woke up the rain was pourin down

There were people standin all around

Somethin warm flowin through my eyes

But somehow I found my baby that night

I lifted her head, she looked at me and said

"Hold me darlin just a little while"

I held her close,

I kissed her our last kiss

I found the love that I knew I had missed

Well now she's gone even though I hold her tight

I lost my love, my life that night

CHORUS

18.Where can I find the guitar tab for (Black, Corduroy, insert song here)

VERY accurate guitar tabs can be found HERE

19.Why did Jack Irons leave the band?

Jack left because of a couple of reasons. He was dealing with his mental illness, as well as carpal tunnell syndrome. He also probably wanted some extra time for his family.Again, for more info on drummers, check out the drummer history section of Lukin.com

20.What do I get if I join the Ten Club?

First of all, joining the Ten Club (or Vitalogy Health Club, whichever you prefer) is not free. However, your yearly $10 fee gets you 2 newsletters, an Xmas single (ON VINYL, no they do NOT put these out on CD, so don't ask =)) some merchandise you can't find anywhere else, and the BEST part is you get to buy tickets ahead of everyone else, and you usually will end up with some of the best seats in the house. For more info on the Ten Club, go to the SYNERGY link below, and click on the Ten Club link from there.

21.I have a copy of Vs. that says Five Against One (on cassettes), or just says Pearl jam (on the CD). Is this some kind of collector's item?

No, this is not a collector's item. The band intended the album to be called Five Against One originally, but changed their mind at the very last minute. Rather than delay the release and spend millions to correct the problem, Epic decided to release the cassette version titled Five Against One as it was going to be originally. For the CDs, the name Pearl Jam was printed with no album title. There are at least 2-3 million of these tapes and CD's in circulation, so they are not rare in the least. However, it seems that the DIGIPACK version of the CD is somewhat hard to find. While I don't know how rare these are, I will say that you don't see as many of these as you do of the regular plastic CD cases.

22.On the back of my Immortality/Not For You/Spin the Black Circle single(s), it says taken from the album "Life." What's the deal with this?

Rather than pay the author of Vitalogy royalties for the use of the name on the singles, the band decided to use Life instead. Life is very close in meaning to Vitalogy, and it's also been rumored that Life was the original title for Vitalogy, although there has been no clarification on this.

23.Where can I find the song(s) I Got Id and or Long Road?

The songs I Got Id (see question 24 for more on I Got Id)and Long Road can be found on the single called Merkinball, which accompanies Neil Young's album Mirrorball, which the band played on.

24.I'm confused. The back of my "MerkinBall" single says the name of one of the songs is "I Got Id", yet I always hear it referred to as "I Got Shit". What's the deal?

I Got Id is simply the radio friendly name the band came up with. The official name is I Got Shit, and Eddie has said this more than a few times in concert.

25.The version of "Even Flow" I hear on the radio and the one on my TEN CD are different. What gives?

The band decided to go back into the studio to re-record Even Flow with DaveA. They released this version to radio, and this was the version they gave to MTV as well. It can be found on the Alive EP, which is a Japanese Import, and besides the new Even Flow, it features the live version of Alive from the video, Dirty Frank, and Wash.

26.What does MFC stand for?

MFC stands for Mini Fast Cars

27.Who's singing lead on Mankind? It doesn't sound like Ed.

That's Stone on lead vox

28.What is it that Eddie's using in Wishlist on SVT to play his solo?

It's called an Ebow and can be found at most music stores. They aren't cheap however, they run anywhere from $75 to $100.

29.What is the band's taping policy?

The band's taping policy is handheld analog recorders only, no external mics, no video, no pre amps. You may also trade copies with other fans, but selling is not allowed!!!

30.At the Atlanta 94 concert broadcast over the radio, Eddie mentions something about looking in your history book for why the next morning is an important day? What's he talking about?

Eddie is talking about April 4, the day Martin Luther King Jr was shot. Immortalized in the words of the U2 song Pride (In the Name of Love) "Early morning, April 4, shots ring out in the Memphis sky"

31.At the Atlanta 94 show, who is singing with Eddie on WMA?

that's Doug Pinnick, vocalist for the band King's X who opened for PJ that night. Also helping out was King's X drummer Jerry Gaskill

32.I found this mp3 that says it's a duet of Eddie and Oasis doing "Daytripper." Is this for real?

No this is Paul Weller, not Eddie

33.I have an mp3 of a song called One Step Up with Eddie singing? What's the story behind this song?

This is a demo of Eddie before his Bad Radio days. It's a cover of a Springsteen song.

34.Ok so how does the whole fan club ticket thing work?

Here's a brief overview:

35.I need info on some cities I'm planning on going to to see the band play; where can I get some hotel info and other pertinent info?

Five Horizons will have their excellent Going Mobile guide up for the US tour soon. Europe is already up.

36.At the second Great Woods show from 1998, why does Eddie change the lyrics in Release to "oh dear John"?

Well at the first Great Woods show, Eddie somehow received a letter on stage from a couple of fans who had lost their brother-from the way Eddie tells it, they ended up going to these people's house and playing songs all night. Listen to his intro on Given to Fly and this will start to make sense.

37.Why isn't the band coming to (insert city here)?

The band cannot hit every city on every tour they do. Many cities went years without seeing the band. It took them 7 years to return to Philadelphia. The entire Bay Area of California got screwed in 1998, as did Texas. The band also has their favorite hotspots that they will probably hit every tour for the most part (Chicago, NY, Boston). There may also be cities that don't get the band again thanks to problems in the past (Hartford comes straight to mind). If you have to wait a few years, wait. If you can get to another show, get there. But don't complain that the band isn't hitting your city, they've bypassed just about everyone in the past.

38.What is a tape tree?

A tape tree is a way of spreading live recordings out to as many people as possible in a short (relatively) amount of time. It starts out with a "seed". This is the copy that starts the tree out. The "Seed" makes copies for what we call "branches." Branches then "branch" the recording out to either another set of branches, or if it's a small tree, to what we call the "leaves." The leaves don't do any taping, but they are the last to get the tape. So it's Seed----->Branches--------->Branches/leaves------->leaves

439.What's the best way to find out if a second show is going to be added after the first has already gone on sale?

If you're at the venue, stick around for about an hour, hour and a half. If you're on your computer, keep reloading the pages-period.
