Film-Philosophy      new issue up       A philosophical review of cinema, mainly of film books, with a special "email salon" for further dialoguing. In 2001, features on Robert Bresson, documentary film, Laura Mulvey, Gilles Deleuze, cognitive semiotics, Bela Tarr, avant-garde film, and more.

Screening the Past       new issue up      Latrobe University's film and history online journal.  Issue 12 "Auteurism 2001" is now up, edited by guest editor Adrian Martin, and features a host of essays on Lois Weber, Fassbinder, Eastwood, Tarkovsky and other auteurs by a wealth of writers including Ken Mogg, Tag Gallagher, and Jodi Brooks. Spectacular.

Bright Lights Film Journal      new issue up        One of our favourite sites - a well-archived now-online-only version of the San Fran mag geared to underground, gay, but also classic films.  Issue 32, April 2001, is now up, with features on European sex and horror films, George Cukor, Fred and Ginger, Goodfellas, Tod Browning's Freaks, and much more.

Cinema Scope     new issue up      Online version of a new Toronto-based film mag, latest issue has heaps of goodies: features on Liv Ullmann, Jean-Luc Godard, Manny Farber, reviews of Baise-Moi, Amores Perros, an interview with Jonathan Rosenbaum, and much more. Highly recommended.

Documenter        new issue up        Australian journal devoted to documentary film-making. March 2001 issue is now up, includes an article on community filmmaking in the US, Tom Zubrycki's address to the History Awards, an interview with Gaylene Preston about her documentaries, and more.

Offscreen      new issue up       A very impressive Canadian site that's been online several years now.  Huge archive of great articles on art and independent cinemas. Latest postings: Iranian cinema in 2000, Jacques Lacan and horror films, Egoyan's Family Viewing, Kiarostami interview.

Images: A Journal of Film and Popular Culture    new issue up     Online mag that is pretty stunning graphically, as well as providing some good content. Latest postings: feature on westerns, Claude Chabrol, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Roger Corman.

Jump Cut           Legendary magazine's web site - mainly contains an index to their hard copy issues.

Cashiers du Cinemart         Zine with quite a cinema emphasis, worth a look.


Framework: The Journal of Cinema and Media       Legendary hardcore British magazine's new website, hot on the heels of its reformation recently after being dormant for most of the past decade. Issue 42, Summer 2000, is posted exclusively online.

Full Alert Film Review       A great site devoted to lesser-known indie/underground films - emphasis on Japanese, Chinese, Iranian, etc. cinemas. Highly recommended.

Scope       Online film journal run out of the Uni of Nottingham, full of substantial, academic pieces.

Otrocampo       For Spanish-speaking cinephiles, here's an online film journal well worth checking out.

24 Frames Per Second      Online film journal with its very own "Best films of all time" section, 24 Picks, the contents of which contrast against our own Top Tens.

The Journal of Religion and Film      If you approach cinema from this direction, this is an indispensable site.  Has articles on Magnolia, Breaking the Waves, Light Sleeper, Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East? and much more.

Village Voice Take One       Check this out - 50 critics list their top films of 1999, the '90s, the century, in The Village Voice.

IndieWire      A high-end mag, attuned to American indies especially, great with industry news, reports from festivals, etc.

M/C - The Journal of Media and Culture     Run out of the University of Queensland, this site has a myriad of articles, on a wide range of the arts.

Urban Cinefile     Australian site, mainly full of reviews, interviews, etc. of mainstream releases.

Filmnet       The infamous Australian daily email newsletter's website.

RealTime      Online version of the Australian arts magazine, featuring the film section "OnScreen".

Cantrills Filmnotes     Basically an ad for the legendary Australian magazine committed to experimental film, with a handy section listing the contents of every issue.

Flicker       A site devoted to experimental/avant-garde cinema.

Proboscis | COIL     A site associated with the English journal Coil, devoted to experimental cinema.  Only a few sample articles available.

Film Comment     Online version of the excellent New York magazine, featuring several sample articles from each hard copy issue.

Film Quarterly     The web page of this well-known magazine, includes a list of the contents of all issues.

Cineaste        Online version of magazine, with sample articles.

Film and Philosophy      Web version of the American annual publication Film and Philosophy.  Articles that are several years old now, but still worth a look.

Convergence      Subtitled "The Journal of Research into New Media Technologies", this is the web page for the journal, with the contents and abstracts of the hard copy articles.

Views Reviews Interviews     A Journal of Cinema and Cultural Theory, the 1999 issue features articles on Kurosawa, Wajda, Brecht, and focuses on Indian cinema.

CRITICS' PAGES

David Bordwell's Website on Cinema        new link      A developing site - various sections organised for it, but not yet completed.

Chris Fujiwara: Writing          Great site with links to many of film critic's Chris Fujiwara's writings, an impressive assortment of reviews and essays on a number of genres/films.

Cinema Greats        A site that has apparently just undergone a redesign, this is Rick Curnutte's site, and he is President of The Internet Film Critics Circle, a Circle we don't know much about, so we'll keep our eyes open.

24FPS        18-year-old Gabe Klinger's site, with some highlights from 2001 up on the current issue.

Theo Panayides        Cypriot critic with his own website, full of capsule reviews (of mainly recent films), and a host of Best lists (his own, links to others', etc.). Includes wonderful reports on 99's Thessaloniki and Athens film festivals. And he has the best ratings system around.

Chronicle of a Passion       A number of the sites featured here get updated regularly by their authors, and this is one of the best ones to keep a regular eye on. Home page of New York critic Steve Erickson, with a mammoth archive of reviews of films from recent years, and a special section on French film critic Serge Daney.  Includes a great links section which lists the pages of a score of critics worldwide.

Jonathan Rosenbaum       This is not, strictly speaking, JR's own page - it's the Chicago Reader's Movie Section.  Still, he features prominenty, and all the reviews are lengthy and wonderful, with a great archive section also. NOTE: His "Top 40 films of 2000" list/essay is now up.

Critical Eye       Melbourne writer Mark Freeman's website - an impressive and regularly updated array of reviews of recent (and some past) releases, and also some more detailed, analytical essays (on Ozu, Sweet Smell of Success, The Graduate, others).

Cinephilia           A Melbourne-based site, it has reviews of films showing around town plus a searchable and browseable database of over 1000 films

Franchement cinéma     Young critic Philippe St-Germaine's page. If only we could speak French, we'd dive with relish into such sections as "correspondances d'un cinéphile"!

Steven Jay Schneider      New York academic's page, has links to his articles, etc.

My Two Cents      And we thought Gabe Klinger was young! This is Andrew Chan's web site, and he is 14. Reviews of recent releases, but also of classics (L'Avventura, Greed, etc.)

Zach Campbell         Another young gun, 17-year-old Zach's site, has an essay on Wes Anderson, reviews of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Ghost in the Shell, etc.

Obsessed About Movies Page   Another web critic with good taste, George Wu, many reviews and Top 10 lists.

Mike's Cinema    Web site of film critic Mike De Jong, subtitled "Unsung Classics of the Silver Screen". Good site for those just discovering art films. Has a feature on Alfred Hitchcock.

Fred Camper      Chicago Reader critic Fred Camper's page, has essays on experimental figures such as Brakhage and Gehr, but also on others such as Mizoguchi, Welles, de Toth. There is also a thought-provoking listing of "Favorite Filmmakers" - one of the best alternative canons you'll ever see.

Strictly Film School      Neat, loving site by NASA engineer Acquarello, providing a great introduction to and overview of art cinema, featuring directors such as Tarkovsky, Bresson, Chabrol, Leigh, Paradjanov, Sautet, and many others.

Victor's World      Victor Couwenbergh's page, including his list of Top 100 films of the century, and some good links to other pages.

deep focus      Critic Bryant Frazer's website, full of reviews of current and recent releases.

Ray Carney     Features excerpts from Carney's books (on Cassavetes, Leigh, etc.) and other essays. Ray is a great believer in "independent/maverick" maverick cinema. Well worth checking out.

Movie Mutations - Letters from (and to) some children of 1960     A Jonathan Rosenbaum-led discussion of cinema and cinephilia, featuring several critics - a must-read!

The Mise-en-Scene Web Page      Hosted by Bill Flavell, this page provides links to articles by Jonathan Rosenbaum, Adrian Martin and others.

B. Ruby Rich      The legendary feminist author's own website, with excerpts from her work, and several discussion groups.

Philip Brophy     As the index page title says:  "Glisten and moist writing with even tone, upsetting".  Film, popular culture, music - there's a lot here.

Bill Routt     Latrobe Uni academic William D. Routt's home page - a man with a sense of humor and quite varied interests!

Australian Screen Director's Association.      Organisation representing the needs and interests of Australian screen directors. Site includes information about membership, the organisation's newsletter and other links.

Australia's Website for the Business of Film and Television     Essentially a resource for news (both local and international), contact details, events, production report and much more for the Australian industry professional.

Kinoeye Archive      Part of Central Europe Review, this is an amazing resource site for articles and information on Central and Eastern European film, covering many (obscure) art films.

The Silents Majority     A huge website devoted to silent cinema:  facts and figures, photos, reviews, profiles, it has the lot.

RML Movie Page     Australian director Richard Lowenstein's impressive directory, linking to literally hundreds and hundreds of web pages.

Screen Network Australia     A great way to find any Australian film website, or to check on industry news, etc.

Australian Film Institute     The AFI's website, includes a catalogue of the films and videos they have for sale and/or rental. Now has an online search through the Research and Information Centre's catalogue.

Cinemedia     Cinemedia is an Australian cultural organisation which encourages and assists the development, production, exhibition and knowledge of film, television and new media. Their website includes information on Cinemedia's new home to be at Federation Square and information on its business units such as Film Victoria, Digital Media Fund, Melbourne Film Office, CAC (see below), Screen Education, Screen Culture, Venues and more.

Cinemedia Access Collection    Wanna see a film?  If you live in Australia, especially in Victoria, this is where various collections are housed - the ever-expanding Cinemedia Access Collection, the National Film and Video Lending Collection, and the French Embassy Collection.

La Jetee           new link          A site devoted to Chris Marker's astonishing film.

Other Cinema           new link        The web site of filmmaker Craig Baldwin, his films and own exhibition project, Other Cinema.

Yi Yi a film by Edward Yang        We haven't seen the film yet in Australia, but here's the nice site for it.

Wong Kar-Wai World Wide Website       An exciting amalgamation of a number of Wong sites - herein lies all you could ask for and more.

The World of Takeshi Kitano        One of numerous sites on the web devoted to Kitano - as good a place to start as any.

The Jim Jarmusch Resource Page     Has a great bibliography, many articles as hyperlinks.

Pola-X        Controversial, obnoxious, magical - it can only be a Leos Carax film.

Hanif Kureishi       The official HK website, essays and short stories published online.

Yasujiro Ozu       A developing site devoted to this Japanese master.  Some good pics up currently, but no text.

Eric Rohmer     Good page which has links to reviews and essays on Rohmer, which are quite scarce on the web.

Orson Welles     If you can read Spanish, check this site out.

The Sergio Leone Home Page    Great page, many articles, stills, links to other Leone sources.

Web of Murnau    "Sunrise is the cinema itself" the author says in this impressive site on F.W. Murnau.  Many great stills.

Hal Hartley, Trouble and Desire     A committed, thorough and loving site devoted to this contemporary American director.

The Egoyan Nucleus     If you're an Atom Egoyan fan, this is a great place to start.

Directed by Brian De Palma     Glossy, full of stills, good overviews of (some of) De Palma's films, links to other DP sites.

The Andrei Tarkovsky Homepage     Good overview of the Russian director, including a message board.

The Questers Home Page     This site has to be seen to be believed. (Wait for the download, it's worth it.)   Opens with a quote from Pascal ("we should seek the truth without hesitation") and goes up from there:  pages on Bresson, Pasolini, Paradjanov, Tarkovsky, Bunuel, Bergman, others.
