This
deformity stems from muscle imbalances in the foot and leg leading to
the abnormal position of the toes. The deformity can be either flexible
or rigid and can involve any of the toes. It needs to be addressed both
with an orthotic device to change the position of the foot while walking
and well fitting shoe gear. If your toes are no longer flexible then
more than likely surgery will be needed to correct your problem.
If you are a diabetic or person with poor circulation it is extremely
important to protect your feet with this problem. Ulcers can result
from poor shoe gear and lead to foot amputations. A visit to your Podiatrist
can be invaluable in deciding if you feet need surgery or can be helped
with orthotic devices.
Hallux Limitus or Stiff Great Toe
This
problem stems from several factors including abnormal pattern of walking,
long first metatarsal bone, arthritis, injury, pronation or a combination.
The problem usually leads to pain and degenerative arthritis of the
joint. It can be addressed with a custom orthotic or shoe and / or surgery.
If this problem is not addressed it can create problems in other joints
such as ankles, knees, hips and back. A "rocker bottom" type shoe can
also help this problem. See your podiatrist for evaluation
of this problem.
Custom
functional orthotics:
Custom functional orthotics can address several components of the problem
at the same time including protection and control of the dysfunction
in the way you walk. However, your feet may still need surgery and this
will need to be assessed by your Podiatrist. In addition good fitting
shoes will be needed to help decrease the pain and to allow for a normal
walking pattern.
Prolabs
Prolabs provide some control of the dysfunction of the way you walk
but do not provide "protection" or cushioning.
Spenco
Cross trainer:
Spenco inserts provide extra cushioning and support. This device is
especially good for the aging foot. It does not provide a large degree
of foot control.
Prothotics
therapeutics:
These shoe inserts offer support and cushioning. This is a good over
the counter type of insert for people with poor circulation and or diabetes
that need protection for their feet. It does not provide a large amount
of foot control.
Apex
Anti-shox:
This is a high quality supportive type over the counter insert. It is
recommended especially for people with poor circulation or diabetes
as it offers excellent cushioning. It does not provide a large amount
of control but, offers good support.
All people with diabetes, poor circulation, burning or numbness
in their feet or who have had previous ulcers absolutely need to see
their foot doctor before and after obtaining any type of foot device
including diabetic custom orthotics to prevent injury to their feet
that could lead to loss of their feet.
