Bunions-Corns/Calluses

Bunions or Hallux abducto valgus are one of the more common foot aliments. The deformity involves the shift of the metatarsal bone one direction with the shift of the big toe the opposite direction. This metatarsal bone shift creates the "bump" seen at the inside of the foot. This deformity can be painful or non-painful, can occur in one or both feet and can be mild to severe. It can also be very flexible or rigid. The cause stems from the foot functioning in an abnormal fashion during ambulation (walking). A person is born with a specific foot type that allows for this mal-position of the foot to evolve over time as the person continues to weight-bear on their feet. This problem is often an inherited problem and inappropriate shoe wear can aggravate it and make the deformity and discomfort worse. It is not specifically "caused" by poor shoe wear. It is often a result of pronation or flat foot. It can also result from certain types of arthritis. It is important to address this dysfunction as earlier as possible to prevent the need for surgery. If it is severe enough surgery may be the best option.

Custom orthotic devices can often help and may even prevent the need for surgery. This is one type of foot aliment in which a custom orthotic and appropriate shoe wear is strongly recommended as early as possible to accommodate the deformity and to prevent worsening of the condition.

Children's feet are very flexible and can acquire bunions. This is called juvenile bunions. For these children that are still growing Prolab orthotics are a good choice. They provide a functional component and are inexpensive enough to change as the child grows. Of course a custom orthotic will be the best option. This deformity must be addressed at a young age to prevent the severe bunion deformity seen in adulthood. If the Bunions are painful surgery may be the best plan followed by custom orthotics.

Custom functional orthotics Custom orthotics are the premier way of providing control of the foot to help prevent bunions and to control it once it has occurred.
