Kosher foods in the Commons?

Christopher Paul, Retriever Weekly Staff Writer, September 20, 2005

I was quite excited when I heard the news that Sohodex had finally addressed the need for Kosher foods in the Commons. In a flash I went over the area delegated for Kosher foods at the back of The Commons food court to the right of "Sunset Strips" fried chicken counter and across from the "Mein Bowl-Asian Food," in the area called the "Smart Market."

What I found moved me beyond disappointment bordering on anger and insult. There were 2 microwave ovens with signs stating, "For Kosher Foods Only," a 5-foot, 3-tier rack with a mini top-loading freezer. On the rack unrefrigerated were vegetarian pepper steak, spaghetti & meatballs, beef stew, and vegetable entrees. The mini freezer contained boxes of frozen food and burritos. In the refrigerated section with the sushi were packages of corned beef, pastrami, smoked whitefish, eggplant salad, sliced salmon, pita bread, and smoked turkey breast. I cant' even phantom how many preservatives must be in the unrefrigerated foods containing meat. How can this be good for you?

During the past five years, students have been asking for Kosher foods. Does Oscar Berninger of Sohodex really think that placing two microwave ovens and allocating a space 2 feet by 5 feet with "heat and eat" meals is an adequate response to the communities needs or would you consider this merely lip service?

Personally as an ex-New Yorker I'd like to see a "Real" Jewish deli counter with a cow tongue in the lunchmeat counter. Then I "know" I'm in the right place. How about some knishes, kosher hot dogs, and cream soda too or maybe black cherry? I see this as an insult to our intelligence and unacceptable. You would think that after all this time Sohodex could do better than this in addressing the problem.
